Senate Republicans deploy ‘nuclear option’ after Gorsuch filibuster

Senate Republicans deployed the so-called “nuclear option” Thursday afternoon in a bid to confirm Judge Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court, moving to overcome a Democratic filibuster just minutes earlier.

The Senate initially voted 55-45 on a motion to end debate on Gorsuch, with four Democrats breaking ranks; it needed 60 to succeed. Known as a filibuster, this vote triggered Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to go “nuclear.”

This means he is trying to change Senate precedent so that the Senate can move to a final roll call with just a simple majority of 51 votes, as opposed to 60. If he succeeds, a final confirmation vote would be held Friday.

The dramatic and fast-paced chain of events is poised to significantly change the way the Senate does business. Each party blames the other for the escalation and the breakdown in the Senate’s parliamentary decorum, and the impact could be felt for years, if not decades, to come.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, kicking off Thursday’s session, blasted Democrats for the filibuster attempt and accused them of driving the upper chamber to this point. He said their opposition to Gorsuch isn’t about the nominee but “the man who nominated him” – and part of an “extreme escalation in the left’s never-ending drive to politicize the courts and the confirmation process.”

Or, this is what he is doing,.... right now. Let’s see if he invokes Rule 19. This shows up the utterly EMPTY arguments of Schumer, Warren, Durbin and the rest of them for meaningless trashing of a fine qualified candidate.

BTW it is the affirmation of QUALIFICATION for the SCOTUS that the Senate is Constitutionally remanded to perform, and this has transmogrified to politically defined “qualifications” as defined by Originalists vs., in the case of liberal dems— whether the candidate will legislate for THEIR agenda from the SCOTUS bench.

Let the RBG deathwatch commence. We won’t even need a debate when she croaks. Epic fail by the dems and I love it.

“It’s time for the filibuster to go in any event.”

The REPUBLICANS never used the filibuster against any SC nominee put forth by a Democrat anyway!

Start PACKING the court while you can. BE RUTHLESS and unapologetic.

IF/WHEN the Dems are in power they will be ruthless. That is a fact.

Mitch didn't consider the Garland nomination. Now Mitch takes the Constitutional option.

McConnell is finally doing something useful.

Now do the same for the next Trump nominee.

My mind pictures President Trump having one foot squarely on the Turtles saggy sack and whispering “Mitch, DON’T make me use both feet” as sweat pours off the Post Turtle.

A beautiful thought actually.

The vote is 52 to 48. The Nuclear option and Reid Rule is now official.

Hatch announced it in the Senate.

The US Senate is no longer the voice of the sovereign states. Republicans control 31 state legislatures but have to tolerate punks like Chuck Schumer and Harry Reid.

We need to repeal the 17th Amendment and re-double the 10th Amendment.

You are so right. If he called them the Left, that is very big. Words do matter, and the Pubs have been neutered forever.

Claire McCaskill of Missouri is supporting the Dem filibuster. She must think her senate seat is safe, or else doesn't plan to run again. We know she has been ill, so maybe the latter. She is SO OVERDUE to leave the senate.

“I know this is an indelicate thing to say, but I find photos of nuclear explosions hauntingly beautiful and fascinating.”

You ain’t the only one.

I remember back in the days of black and white tv a station did a show about nuclear testing.
The narrator said something about the US testing the largest nuclear weapon ever and the screen was filled with the image of a nuclear explosion.

My great uncle was sitting across the room but I heard him whisper “the hand of God”.
I have been fascinated by images of nuclear explosions ever since then.

Now Republicans have no excuse for not appointing someone like Scalia the next time that there is a vacancy on the Supreme Court.
