I went through the flu about 6 weeks ago.
This one was bad. Puking, coughing, sweating and high fever (105F).
It lasted 2-1/2 days and then I was basically over it. I think this was the sickest I’ve been in 30 years.

Did you get a flu shot last fall?

Yes, I did, but I now find out that I needed a flu shot for seniors. Evidently seniors have been exposed to so many viruses in their lifetime and have had so many flu shots, that the body looks at the virus antigen from the shot and says yeah yeah yeah and only does a superficial job at making antibodies.
Senior Flu Shots deliver 2.5x to 3X the antigens that stimulate antibody production. This is to compensate for the resistance built up in senior immune systems.

The flu shot was only 40% effective. It was somewhat better if you got the shot every year.

I’m just glad I didn’t get The Autism from the shot this year. Oh wait...

“The Spanish Flu of 1918 was an unprecedented catastrophe”

The Spanish Flu actually activated in Spring of 1918 but was not fatal. When it came back in the Fall, it was deadly, killing 2% of the worlds population. But people who had the flu in the Spring were spared.

If the antibodies from previous shots are already there, they'll attack the antigens from the current shot.

Fifty-three deaths out of a population of around 10 million really isn’t much. If that’s all you’ve suffered, you might as well declare victory and have a celebration.

I read that it was not the FLU that killed people but the resulting pneumonia from it.
One doctor, back in the 1970s said there was no worry about the Swine Flu as we had the antibiotics to fight off the pneumonia.

If you will remember, the swine flu was considered to be as deadly as the 1918 flu, but wasn’t.

Grandmother on moms side survived it in 1918 while losing a grandfather and a couple of siblings as I recall. She’ll be 100 this December.

Actually, people’s immune systems killed them trying to fight the flu. They bled out of their lungs. When they went into the permafrost to get samples from 1918, they took lung samples. That flu variant is in today’s flu vaccine

Sickly people were spared from death. It mostly affected young healthy people.
Now we have anti-viral drugs but people in undeveloped areas could be heavily affected. I spent a whole week at Boy Scout Camp studying the Spanish Flu while the kids were doing activities.

I remember reading of this! wonder if there is some smallpox virus hiding, waiting to be dug up in the permafrost.

That was one of the discussions when they went after the virus.

Had the shot. Got the flu. I volunteer at a charter school, so my line is: “Every disease I’ve needed to catch I’ve caught in kindergarten.”

I don’t remember ever having anything like this, but then that could be one of the effects. The usual flu symptoms lasted for only a few days, with only one really bad day. The cough persisted for several weeks, and seven weeks on, I still feel a certain lassitude and lack of focus, like I’m still not quite over it.

From their reports, it sounds like my mother-in-law and her husband came down with something similar. She’s OK, but he’s dead and buried (I’m sure 70 years of chain-smoking contributed).

Yes, this flu was a bad one.

I have not had a flu shot in twenty years. I have not had a flu in twenty years either.

In the case of bird flu, all the large commercial producers two years ago that immunized their flocks to bird flu, lost said flocks to bird flu, they said it was a different strain. Odd thing was the small producers who did not immunize their flocks did not have a problem.

Beware the snake oil salesman that sells a much stronger ersion of his cure when his last cure had you puking your guts out...

Next time, shots or not try oregano oil from northern here and spice, P73 brand at first symptoms. It’s no FDA miracle cure like vaccines but it clears out the double ended squirts immediately.

If you get that sweaty, dinner did not digest feeling and take it, it’s over in twenty minutes.

Yeah, those in my family who didn’t have gotten the crud this year.

I think the vaccine people really screwed up.
