Sotomayor’s demeaning views on race
nypost ^ | April 23, 2014 | Mike Gonzalez

Tuesday’s Supreme Court ruling that Michigan voters had the right to ban racial preferences in university admissions didn’t sit well with the court’s self-described “Wise Latina,” Justice Sonia Sotomayor. Her 58-page-long dissent made clear that she’ll be the last line of defense for affirmative-action policies at the highest court in the land.

But a look at the dissent as well as her own history, makes clear that the lady doth protest too much. Immigrants and their children simply have no claim on affirmative action — if anyone does. To the contrary, these policies hurt their intended beneficiaries.

The court didn’t rule on the merits of affirmative action, but on whether voters can opt to ban its use in public universities. Sotomayor tried to do several things as she fought a rear-guard battle.

She sought to equate affirmative action with voting rights, which didn’t fly. More interestingly, she also vainly tried to read this policy into the Constitution, the better to save it from future challenges.

The Constitution, she wrote, “guarantees that the majority may not win by stacking the political process against minority groups permanently, forcing the minority alone to surmount unique obstacles in pursuit of its goals — here, educational diversity that cannot reasonably be accomplished through race-neutral measures.”

In other words, one of the highest Hispanics in the land argues that, without preference policies, minorities can’t hope to reach a proportionate participation in universities.

Can you imagine what reading this opinion would do to a young Puerto Rican or Mexican-American girl full of hopes about her own abilities? As Linda Chavez once put it, “Ultimately, entitlements based on their status as ‘victims’ rob Hispanics of real power.”

It’s heartening that by a 6-2 majority, the high court didn’t let such nonsense go unchallenged by the voters.

I’m still trying to figure out why Barack Obama nominated former Panamanian dictator Manuel Noriega to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Has anyone ever followed up on Affirmative Action college applicants that are given preference, to see if they actually complete college? Do they end up with successful careers? Do they then mentor others in similar situations to help them succeed, or do they pull up the ladder behind themselves?

I’m curious. So much of the CR@P that the Socialists push never gets looked at again to see if it actually helps or harms.

“”...self-described “Wised Latina,” “

The word is LATRINA! A colloquial description of what most people think of her opinions. But not to worry, she's going to suffer twenty years or more as a minority of two, maybe three, once Ruthie takes a dirt nap and Kennedy retires. Also, Breyer isn't a spring chicken either. Best guess, Trump gets four picks, particularly if he wins a second term. Then there's alway President Pence to extend the string. And when people get all uppity about cruise missiles, they ought to look at Trump's judicial legacy for the country.

[S]tudents with credentials more than one standard deviation below their science peers at college are about half as likely to end up with science bachelor degrees, compared with similar students attending schools where their credentials are much closer to, or above, the mean credentials of their peers.
http://dailysignal.com/2015/12/02/how-affirmative-action-at-colleges-hurts-minority-students/

At the University of Texas, whose racial preference programs come before the Supreme Court for oral argument on October 10, the typical black student receiving a race preference placed at the 52nd percentile of the SAT; the typical white was at the 89th percentile. In other words, Texas is putting blacks who score at the middle of the college-aspiring population in the midst of highly competitive students. This is the sort of academic gap where mismatch flourishes. And, of course, mismatch does not occur merely with racial preferences; it shows up with large preferences of all types.

Research on the mismatch problem was almost non-existent until the mid-1990s; it has developed rapidly in the past half-dozen years, especially among labor economists. To cite just a few examples of the findings:

Black college freshmen are more likely to aspire to science or engineering careers than are white freshmen, but mismatch causes blacks to abandon these fields at twice the rate of whites.
Blacks who start college interested in pursuing a doctorate and an academic career are twice as likely to be derailed from this path if they attend a school where they are mismatched.
About half of black college students rank in the bottom 20 percent of their classes (and the bottom 10 percent in law school).
Black law school graduates are four times as likely to fail bar exams as are whites; mismatch explains half of this gap.
Interracial friendships are more likely to form among students with relatively similar levels of academic preparation; thus, blacks and Hispanics are more socially integrated on campuses where they are less academically mismatched.

She sounds like she is saying that she got where she is from racial preferences, not achievement.

If so, I agree,
