The don't look a thing alike. Globmaster wings are toward the middle of the fuselage (front to back), MD-80s are well aft. Globemaster 4 huge engines under the wings, MD80 two small ones mounted on the rear fuselage. They do both have T tails.
One can confuse, at a distance, one of the DC-9 family with some of the newer commuter jets that are almost as large and have the same general layout.
Curious, what compelled hundreds of you to fill up? Just being prepared in case rising gas prices or gas shortages potential or was their something on the news.
I filled up 3 cars late morning that day, but no one else in my area seemed concerned.
First person to get it right. Another common assumption...AF1 = Air Force 1. Nope. That would be Air France 1. Air Force 1 in FAA terminology would be A1. Like the steak sauce.
The C-17 was probably part of the presidential support mission. Back in the late ‘90s it was called Banner Express. When Air Force 1 lands at Andrews, or anywhere else for that matter, there is a 30 minute ramp freeze in effect. No planes in, no planes out. Not sure what that Globemaster was doing there. He should have been in a 30 minute holding pattern. Been there, done that, got the flight suit patch.
Except when it’s Marine One.
The C17/globemaster is easily 2-3x heavier than a MD-80...
Moonman just messin with ya
The discussion expanded, and we determined...
Air Force: Air Force One
Navy: Navy One, Marine One
Civilian: Executive One
I appreciate your distinction. You were right.
Would y’all look at this? Yarddog saw this Saturday.

I just saw a strange airplane.
I live in the Florida Panhandle. I was sitting on my porch watching a couple of commercial airliners probably from Panama City. They were both headed roughly NW but in slightly different directions.
As they faded in the distance, I saw another approaching from just slightly South of West and headed just barely North of East. It immediately struck me as different from the others. First it appeared to be going much faster and second, it just looked different.
I was viewing through good Nikon Tropical 7X50 binoculars and it looked almost like a cruise missile but more probably a large drone. I realize a cruise missile could not start from my area and reach any interesting place.
I took two quick photos but it was so far away that they are little more than blobs. I will upload one anyway and post it just in case anyone can recognize what it is.
I do want to stress just how fast it was moving tho I never heard a sonic boom.
Makes sense, controller issue...
Bush went from Sarasota, FL to Barksdale AFB, LA and from there to Offutt AFB in Nebraska. He left Offutt to return to Washington departure 4:30pm EST on 9-11-2001 (3:30pm Central Time)
Flight time is 2hrs. 45 mins, probably less since there was no other aircraft aloft and AF1 could have been at max speed. (actually there were several non-commercial in the air, corporate jets, etc.) Assuming 500mph+ avg speed, this would put AF1 over Columbus on that day at roughly 5:30-5:40 PM EST (crossing the time zone) in the evening. Directionally— heading due EAST.

Well, we were filling up to just be prepared for the unknown and I suspect the others were as well. Every gas station in our suburban community was packed, people were just waiting and very quietly talking among each other, almost whispering and then the guy pointed up, saying look. The contrails were obvious and then we realized what we were looking at. I can’t exactly remember, but there were at least four fighters maybe six and truthfully seeing AF1 gave me a sense of security. I remember thinking what must have been going on in that plane.
Wow...
Guess us midwest Freepers think alike ;)
As I said, there did not seem to be a lot of concern about gas supplies here in CHIcago area or if there was, people were being tight lipped about it...You guys out three are better preppers ;)
It really was a a surreal few days though.
I live between both O’Hare and Midway airports—always air traffic...commercial planes, charters, helicopters, etc. It was so eerily quiet after 9/11 although there were a few military planes flying.
Last Sept 11 on the 9-11 thread was posted a very long, very satisfying, very illuminating article on just what WAS happening on AF1 on 9-11. I got lost in the article for hours.
so hillary finally got her pilot’s license huh?
What struck me the most was how hushed and softly people were talking and seemed as though things were in slow motion. I realized later we (the nation) must have been in shock.
Cruise missiles generally cruise at airliner type speeds. There are a few special supersonic variants. The max range of the ALCM and the Tomahawk are classified, but both likely have variants that can reach a target 2K miles away.
You might have seen a cruise missile test, as some new variants such as AGM-158C and others are currently being tested.
“Why dont they know who was flying?”
You can bet your bottom dollar that they know.
When the pilots’ identity are not released, you know two things for sure:
1) this person was not a straight, white, Christian male, and
2) this person is enjoys immunity from blame or shame because he/she is either LGBT, female (any color), black/brown male, or has friends in very high places.
Civil aircraft? Executive One
Correct - and it was actually used once.
During the fuel crises in the ‘70s, President Nixon once flew on a commercial airliner to save fuel - mainly a symbolic gesture.
