Carson: HUD-Funded Projects Will Grow Jobs For Low-Income Americans

Low-income Americans will no longer be passed over when the federal government pays the bill for construction projects, HUD Secretary Ben Carson said Thursday.

Carson said using a rule that has been ignored for much of the past 50 years is part of his different approach to running the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

“It’s not how many people we can get into public housing,” Carson said during an interview with Newsmax TV. “It’s how many people we can get out of it.”

No, but there is one. And God bless Dr. Carson for making a difference.

I was in Boston when the mega-billions, government-funded Big Dig was built. The unions managed to keep all the jobs for their own, multi-generational, white union membership—when the city had plenty of low-skill blacks in the neighborhood who could have used the jobs and a hand up.

The best way to shut down HUD is to shut down the need for it by putting their clients to work.

I trust Dr. Carson to continue to make a difference in this position and God bless President Trump for giving him the responsibility and talking him into taking the job.

No, I think what Dr. Carson is saying is to put the people to work on these places so they can progress to better place in life, show and teach skills, and then we won’t have HUD anymore...

Dr. Carson is already on the right track by making public the amount of missing money and waste at the agency. The agency has long been a slush fund for democrats to spend on their friends to get elected. If Carson’s only achievement is to get control of the budget and spend money only on what the agency has been created for, that would actually help to drain the swamp.

I agree with you. Dr. Carson was brought up in the projects. He gets it that the best program to get someone off of welfare is a job.

I'm not comfortable with the way all the profits for construction projects in OH seem to go to a small group of construction companies that line the pockets of pols. It seems that they have a myriad of ways to avoid actually hiring minorities and inner city residents.

The best way to shut down HUD is to first eliminate FHA loans.

Yes, there are some great examples of job training, especially teaching self-esteem and soft skills such as proper dress, speech, conduct, etc for the workplace in public housing units. Its a shame this is necessary but the Great Society has resulted in several generations where no family member has held a job, so these work ethics have not been taught.

FHA backs home loans across the nation. I don't know the percentage. I would guess as many as 50% in my state. Low money down, discounted loans to people who cannot get a loan from a mortgage company for a variety of reasons. Most often because they don't have any money. FHA will loan even if the 1.5% they put down is given to them or loaned to them by a family member etc. So if you have no money... you get an FHA backed (insured loan). When these deals crash the mortgage company get's bought out by FHA (kept whole on the deal). HUD now owns the home and puts it on an incredibly, crazy, long list of government owned homes. They sit empty for months (because if they all went on the market at once home prices would absolutely crash across the country) until their turn to be sold comes up. Then someone buys it for a little of nothing because they are almost always torn up. AND, the government gives first time homeowners who buy these homes huge discounts, incentive money for repairs etc. With the requirement they live in the home for 3 years.

The government has no business being in the housing business. FHA is a criminal enterprise that employees thousands of bureaucrats across our country.

Dr. Carson, where did that $500B go? Inquiring conservative minds want to know!

I hadn’t realized it was that big a program.

Of course, we should have neither any of the federally-backed mortgage programs—and we should phase out the mortgage deduction, in favor of lower overall rates, on income taxes as well.

Just as Rick Perry will see great changes in he Department of Energy, Dr. Carson will do the same at HUD. ARMSTRONG WILLIAMS had this to say about the man.

The nation would consider itself fortunate if the young were to see Dr. Carson as a role model/hero, and cast aside the images seen in that capacity at this time. Bruce Jenner/Caitlyn? Please, no!!

We agree. I’m a realtor and I just don’t work with buyers who I know are going to go FHA. Sometimes you have to, like if you have a listing and a buyer comes along who is going to go FHA. You have an obligation to your seller to get it sold. But if I run across some buyers and I know they have no money and are going to need FHA or other special financing.... I just don’t mess with them. (the advantage to being semi-retired)
