The American Confederacy Is Still Alive In A Small Brazilian City Called Americana
Business Insider ^ | 5-7-2017 | Melia Robinson

When the American Confederacy lost the Civil War in May 1865, 10,000 Southerners fled the US for a small city in Brazil, where they could rebuild their lives and carry on their traditions.

Now, 150 years later, their story has been seemingly erased from the history books.

But deep in the heart of Brazil, descendants of these confederate expats gather annually to celebrate their controversial history and maintain their traditions and culture. In 2015, Vice's Mimi Dwyer attended the festival and revealed what life is like in the city called Americana.

Each year, the small Brazilian city of Americana throws a huge celebration to commemorate the 10,000 Confederates who fled the American South after their side lost the Civil War.

(snip)

Today, their descendants look upon the Confederate flag not as an emblem of racism and slavery but as a symbol of something their ancestors held dear to their hearts.

I doubt that anyone is "erasing" anything, but it is fading away as most things do. Entropy is a bitch.

Confederate Constitution, Article I Section 9(4):

No bill of attainder, ex post facto law, or law denying or impairing the right of property in negro slaves shall be passed.

Didn’t a bunch of Nazis also flee to Brazil?

Fascinating. They didn’t bring any ex-slaves with them. Latino Confederates? I wonder if any KKK types want to move there? Or Democrats?

No mention of how many slaves they kept, and what happened to them. Of course they would have been freed, so if any went to Brazil they were kidnapped.

True. People down there know where they came from, but apart from the tourist business, it's a little like Dutch or the Huguenots or the Scots in New York or South Carolina or North Carolina. Not exactly like that because it happened more recently, but they're Brazilians and they aren't looking to restore the Confederacy.

Or whether they were able to acquire more slaves there. Guess it doesn’t matter, chattel slave or pay’em a penny. The elites learned the penny much cheaper in the long run.

If anything it would appear that people are trying to keep the story alive.

I’ve found similar news stories (since archived) that were covered here over the years:

Half of the Brazilian population of 200 million self identify as Black. There are more Blacks in Brazil than any other country outside Africa.

Somehow these Confederates were later induced to give up slavery without resorting to arms. What did Brazil do differently that allowed this to happen?

I have to disagree — Aren’t Confederate memorials and statues being torn down in New Orleans and elsewhere in the South? Aren’t some schools renaming buildings which were long named for former slave owners?

To me, those acts and many more, are part of erasing “uncomfortable” (i.e. politically incorrect) aspects of US history.
