Report: After taxes, Ithaca residents left with just 2 percent of income

Reclaim NY hosted the event leading up to the release of a fully-fledged report on the affordability crisis and its detailed effect on Tompkins County.

The report accredits a general economic decline in the Southern Tier to a loss of manufacturing sectors while other regions in the state continue to develop and therefore put Albany’s spending one step ahead.

“Unlike Long Island or the Lower Hudson Valley that have higher incomes and larger tax bases, unfunded mandates are bankrupting county and town governments in the Southern Tier to the point where some can’t even afford a paint job on public buildings since a large portion of their budget is spent on Albany’s various mandates,” the report reads.

“The methodology of the Affordability Crisis Report takes all the taxes you pay and then it combines it with expenses,” Reclaim New York Communications Director, Doug Kellogg said. “It’s a great set of tax data because it includes property taxes and excise taxes, the income taxes, the sales taxes. Then adds on basics like food, gas, energy, then gives you a perspective on what it costs you.”

The report itself examines something called the “wake-up cost,” for each municipality in the county, calculating the average resident’s tax burden and how much money they are left after taxes and basic costs, like food and gas. In Ithaca, the report reads, the median income-earning family makes $46,423 per year and, after basica expenses, are left with just 2-percent of that after paying their total tax burden, an amount of just $80 per month for a range of additional expenses and saving.

Good for them. But that’s too much for them. Take it all and divide it among those that don’t work.

They probably are sad that they cannot get that last 2%

Phillips’ presentation notes that 33 percent of income for the median household income in Ithaca is spent on taxes

I'm calling BS. I guarantee that number is higher when you account for federal taxes, state taxes, local taxes, county taxes, sales taxes, school taxes, property taxes, use taxes, service taxes, fuel taxes, sin taxes, vehicle taxes, etc. There's no way it's only 33%.

The problem, RC one, is that you think you're normal. You have a good job. Own a nice home. You know what taxes *you* pay, and you know that it is a lot more than 33% of your income. But a lot of people aren't like you. They don't pay taxes at all, bringing down the tax rate on the median household income.

Gov Jerry Brown in Calif said the taxpayers are freeloaders.
Meanwhile he has inherited what he has and he and his sister have never worked a private job, they get free cars, housing, medical, pension, per diem money for lunch/expenses which is more then many make a day etc.

Yet we are the freeloaders!

Sorry to hear that Ithaca is the city of evil.
When I hear the name I think of the 20 gauge Ithaca
shotgun I learned to hunt wild pheasants starting at
the age of 7 in the NorCal rice farming region. At
some point my dad lent the gun to his brother.
My cousin took the gun to Oregon when he got old
enough to go logging. He lost it to a rotten, thiefin’
girlfriend. Now, no more Ithaca and no more wild
pheasants in NorCal.

Sadly. They haven’t actually made those guns there in, I think, at least 30 years

Yeah, the welfare bums and college students probably skew the numbers a lot.

Our Texas property taxes have gone from 2 weeks of take home income to 3 1/2 months of take home. Throw in house insurance and everything else and we’re lucky to have a dime left.

I’m sure you can thank all the CA transplants for that.

CA transplants. Exactly. That’s exactly who I blame. They come here to get out of Kalifornica but bring their wacky ideas with them.

I got a really good deal on one of their company cars when they went belly up - a Buick Electra! While stationed at the NROTC Unit at Cornell, I did dislike the people that lived there - glad to hear they pay so many taxes. Makes me wonder why they continue to hammer themselves in the head like that.

While Ithaca may be The City of Evil, Albany remains the Capitol of Confiscation. From Buffalo East along the Southern tier, I expect the area to become like Detroit.
