Motorcyclist detained for driving at protesters on SF street (He'll be called a white supremacist)

San Francisco police detained a motorcyclist who they said drove his bike at a group of protesters demonstrating against the federal health care bill in an apparent attempt to hit them, according to witnesses as well as photographs and videos from the scene.

A few dozen people were staging a “die-in” early Wednesday afternoon on Seventh Street near Mission Street when the man on a red motorcycle appeared, said one of the protesters, 43-year-old Tracey Brieger of Emeryville.

She said the activists, some of whom held up posters that looked like tombstones to decry the Republican health care bill designed to replace the Affordable Care Act, had planned to block the intersection for about 10 minutes.

They had been lying in the street for about 7 minutes when a motorcyclist turned the wrong way on the one-way street and drove toward the protesters, witnesses said.

“He was revving and revving, he was gunning it, aiming at people who were laying down,” said Brieger.

The man was soon surrounded by police and detained, witnesses said. In video footage of the confrontation, officers appear to point weapons at him and order him off his bike.....

Do the SF police arrest bicyclists from Critical Mass when they ram their bicycles at cars and pedestrians?

They must have forgot to tell us how many were hit.

It says he “attempted to hit.” Sounds like the police stopped him before he reached the protestors. And therefore, it seems uncertain whether he even meant to hit them.

Typical SF police, I’d say.

Looks like he was exercising his freedom of speech just like the die-in crowd. Why would the police decide that riding a bike on a road was a crime why disturbing peace by lying on the intersection was not? However, he probably shouldn’t have turned around and tried to go through the die-in crowd a second time.

I’d probably be on his side if he hadn’t driven the wrong way down a one-way street.

It would really annoy me if I was driving on a road and could get guns pointed at me because some idiots are lying in the street and I don’t get out and join them.

The man was soon surrounded by police and detained,

So the cops were there (a couple blocks from PDHQ), watching the protestors block the streets for 7 minutes and did nothing? Orders to stand down no doubt.

SF is a lost cause. If NK were to nuke it, it would be sad.

Okay, a good sized bike could do some initial damage, but you’re on two wheels, not in a cage and your mass is around 1K pounds, with a minimal surface area for ramming.

SF? Had to be a democrat.

staging a “die-in” . . .

I'm so confused. Were they insincere about their die-in, and found the idea of actually dying to be unpleasant?

How lame is it to lie down in the road--but then get all huffy about finding yourself in danger of getting hit by traffic?

Why weren’t the police rousting these flakes from the street? You don’t lie down in the street. The street is for cars and motorcycles. This is pretty much common knowledge for most of us.

You can be pulled off a bike easier than out of a car, so yes, I do understand the motorcyclist’s potential concerns.

Besides, street for motor vehicles, sidewalks for people. Those that are confused about this should not complain when their “die in” has some real life dyin’.

Admirable attempt but if you’re going to do something like that, you need the proper mount. Like an old K-5 Blazer or full size Bronco or Ram Charger. Kangaroo bar in the front is effective.
