SpiceJet’s order to buy planes from Boeing will support many American jobs: Trump (100 planes)

US President Donald Trump on Tuesday said a recent order for 100 new aircraft placed by an Indian airline will create thousands of American jobs, referring to SpiceJet’s decision to buy planes from Boeing.

SpiceJet had announced an order worth $22 billion with the US aircraft maker in January. The order is expected to create 1.32 lakh high-skilled jobs in America.

“I was pleased to learn about an Indian airlines’ recent order of 100 new American planes, one of the largest orders of its kind, which will support thousands and thousands of American jobs,” Mr. Trump said alongside Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the White House Rose Garden.

During their maiden meeting, Mr. Modi and Mr. Trump discussed a range of issues.

Mr. Trump’s remarks come at a time when there are concerns in certain quarters that jobs are moving out of the US.

SpiceJet Chairman and Managing Director Ajay Singh said the planes under the $22 billion order would be manufactured in the US.

“As per the US Department of Commerce, it creates 1,32,000 high-skilled, high-paid American jobs within the US,” Mr. Singh said in a statement.

“We have placed a large order for the Boeing 737 MAX, in fact, the biggest ever placed by an Indian airline with Boeing. The new planes start to join the fleet in the middle of 2018 and with that our operating cost will further go down,” he noted.

The no-frills airline, which was on the verge of going belly up more than two years ago, has remained profitable for nine straight quarters.

“We have paid back most of the liabilities. Today, there are no government dues, there is zero bank debt. We have cleaned the slate as far as the past is concerned,” Mr. Singh said.

Besides the order placed in January, the airline last week inked an initial pact for 40 Boeing 737 MAX planes. This includes conversion of 20 737 MAX 8 airplanes from the carrier’s existing order of 737 MAX 10s. Noting that funding arrangements for the plane orders are “coming very quickly”, the SpiceJet chief said the airline has already funded significant number of those aircraft through a sale and leaseback mechanism.

“And we have several offers. We really see no great challenge to funding these planes. Going further, we will take a call, depending on what is cheaper for us at that point in time. Our objective is that whatever we go in for should reduce the cost of financing. Fortunately, we are in a pretty conducive financial environment, where interest rates are low across the world,” he added.

India’s domestic aviation sector has been growing in double-digits for more than two years and many airlines, including SpiceJet, have ambitious expansion plans.

“There is enough for more; even if the market grows around 12 to 15 %, there is a requirement of 60 aircraft every year. There is space for all,” Mr. Singh said.

They damn well better buy Boeings.

They’ve sucked so much cash and business out of the U.S. while colonizing Northern California, there has to be some reciprocation.

At least they send mostly their high-end people, not their peasants and peons. I live in the mid-cities in D/FW. Our Wal-Mart has 1/4 Indian, 1/4 Muslim, 1/4 White and the rest a mix of Hispanic & Black customers. Of the Whites 1/2 appear to be country people and 1/2 affluent city types.

There's about to be HUGE orders for the Boeing 737 MAX 10 from American, Delta and United. Why? They will replace the aging 757-200 fleet, except for the 757-200's that will be used on "thin" intercontinental routes.

Their "high end" appears to be mediocre programmers who graduate from IIT Madras, get a grad school slot at a mid level school in the U.S., and then use that as a sling shot to get them into a click bait software company doing code janitor work. And then they bring in Mama and Papa, who you can see wandering the streets of the Santa Clara valley, hands clasped behind their back, contemplating the day they get on U.S. SSI, a system no one in their entire family history has every contributed a dime to.

Oh. And yes, thousands of H1-B's, almost 100% Indian.

Because apparently, those are the only people on Planet Earth who should be allowed into the U.S. on a work visa.

Not Englishmen, Irishmen, Scots, French, Germans, Swiss, Italians, Swedes, Norwegians, Czechs, Slovaks, Hungarians (like Hans Bethe and Stanislaw Ulam), Norwegians, Belgians, Spaniards, Basques, Latvian/Lithuanian/Estonians, Austrians, Croats, Serbians, Greeks, Macedonians, Bulgarians, Romanians, Ukrainians and especially not Russians (like Sergey Brin).

Nope. No one on Earth to bring into the United States of America, founded by White Anglo-Saxon Protestants, except the upper caste of the most stratified, crooked, corrupt and alien society save China that exists.

No one at all.

I don’t think so, unless FedEx wants them for spare parts for its 119-strong 757-200SF fleet.

Well, my wife is a Goettscheer, and she looks like Melania.

But her G-Grandmother really was born in Gottschee. And left before WWI in the first Austrian diaspora from what is now called Slovenia.

So hard to say. Supposedly they all came from the one village, but that’s too narrow a definition for people who were sent there 700 years ago.

So she very well could be. Definitely looks the part.

PS, most Gottscheers live in Cleveland, Toronto and Queens as noted. The newcomers mostly in Queens. And they think of themselves still as Austrian, not Yugoslavian or Slovenian.

Sorry, but very few people who graduates from the IITs are mediocre. That school system is more selective than the Ivy League and only the best students in India - students who actually know how to do math, as opposed to the products of our high school system - get in. We interview newly graduated programmers a lot this time of year - the IIT grads are very, very good and very much in demand.

Worked with a lot of them.

Not in agreement.

Not clear to me why you can’t find similar or better in the U.S.: you know as well as I do that American programmers are discriminated against routinely.

And don’t say “we can’t find them”, because many people don’t bother majoring in Comp Sci any more since they know they’ll have a hard time finding a job, especially with nonsense prejudiced statements like “as opposed to the products of our high school system”.

PS - how’d you get there, Bubba? You from Mumbai?

That's not nonsense or prejudice - that's an observation. If you think our public schools are teaching math or hard sciences at the same levels as the Chinese or Indians, you're wrong.

PS - how’d you get there, Bubba? You from Mumbai?

I'm from California, and stop trying to make it personal. Our public school system is failing hard when it comes to math and science education and we will not be able to sustain a technological lead if the tech industry depends so heavily on non-Americans. Too many of those IIT grads and top Chinese students you're sneering at think they can do better back in their home countries than they will in Silicon Valley - we no longer even get the IIT grads, we get the ones who went to second and third rate schools. American students from our K-12 and college systems who show up for software interviews are few and far between.
