Street workers were gathered at the parking space, a tipoff that something was amiss. That's when Westerberg, 25, found the vehicle in the gaping hole — about 20 feet (6 meters) deep and 8 to 10 feet (2.5 to 3 meters) across — that took up the entire southbound lane of the street, next to a vacant building expected to feature apartments, office space and retail.

No injuries were reported.

We can see the water main leaking in this photo, so it seems obvious that the water must have carried off dirt until there was no adequate support under the pavement.

This is related to the Michael Brown shooting...or climate change.

Well get back to you once we have bought and paid for research that supports our conclusions.

heck if I know.... there must be some kind of underground flow or stream, because all that water is pouring out and it’s not flowing up onto the street....

Double parking. Both above and below ground.

St. Louis has areas of limestone - the leaking water (or rainwater) dissolves the rock. The gushing main no doubt happened when it collapsed. But if might have been leaking over the past 50 years too.

Back in NJ I rented a cottage at a farmhouse. The owner complained about having to pay for garbage hauling. “Why back in the day we would just drive it out back and toss it in the sinkhole. 20 years of doing that and you STILL couldn’t see the bottom!”

However, some mountain creeks would have used toilet paper along the edges. Folks running their toilet pipes right into a sinkhole too - and after a few miles of caverns will run into a creek. Yuck.

It’d be quite a shock to, say, come out of a meeting and find one’s car in a big sinkhole... I hope the car owner has good insurance!
