Re: Lubbock, TX

I'll guess ethnicity may play a role.

In 2010, Lubbock was 45% non-white, including almost 9% Black.

I would bet it’s even more non-white by now. They’ve had a few very grisly deaths over the years, too. Don’t ask me to name them. I couldn’t begin to remember them. I just remember reading about them.

Aren’t a lot of these cities also university towns and all that entails?

I was born in Detroit and grew up at 6 Mile and Livernois. The early 60’s was a boom time to be a kid. Detroit was a powerhouse.

Crime killed Detroit, not the Japanese. The city never recovered from the 1967 riots despite the marketing campaign of the Renaissance Center...sad.

Off the cuff, does anybody know if all 50 have DemocRAT mayors or if any of these cities are run by Republicans and have been for a while? I have to guess that 90% of these cities have had decades of Democrats for Mayors.

Lack of paleface population seems to be a factor in more than one city on this list. Or concentration of certain demographics whom it is not polite to mention.

"yes is in the middle of no where"

From my experience even nowhere is a couple hours drive from Lubbock

I remember Detroit a little. My mom, now 95, grew up there and we didn’t leave until she was in her early forties. She tells me wonderful stories, and she still deeply yearns for it as it was.

I was very small when we left in 1965 but I do remember having a great childhood there. My mom is 92 and she grew up in Chicago but moved there with my dad in 1954 when the city was a powerhouse. My memories are good but 1967 killed it all...then came the infamous Mayor Coleman (Marbles in his mouth) Young and that was it, finito.

My mom grew up on the east side and moved to NW Detroit when she and my dad married. She would talk fondly about shopping and working downtown. We lived near Grand River and Evergreen. My sisters and I would ride bikes all over the place. I think we got a great education at our grade school and our high school was top notch for the city. My high school has been torn down and is now a Meijer’s. The neighborhood near my grade school, which has been badly vandalized, has many vacant lots. It is sad. Besides the riots, and the hateful Colman Young, the process of destroying neighborhoods through the threat of forced busing really hurt the city. My mom moved to Plymouth in ‘83. She died a couple of years ago at the age of 97.

I have an acquaintance from church who is an architect and involved in projects in Detroit. He is very optimistic about the trend things are taking there. I am hoping that there are enough Detroiters who saw the tragedy of the '67 riots and what they did to Detroit and it's citizens and have vowed, "Never again!"

I left in 1965, too. We lived on West Fort, though...now you know why we left! I remember being very young, lying in bed at night and hearing boats on the river.

The people in Lubbock are conservatives. Is that counted as undesirable?

SI!

I saw that too.
Only downside to Salt Lake City is you need to be Mormon to fit in to the community.

Other than that, Salt Lake is far, far from being on a top 50 worst cities list

Not true. In fact, Salt Lake is the least LDS city in Utah. Less than 50%, which is saying something here.

There is plenty of non-Mormon community and culture in SLC.
