The cargo ship named M/V ACT was carrying steel from the southern port of İskenderun to İzmit in the northwest when the Greek coast guard called on the ship to divert its course to Rhodes, Turkey-based Deniz Haber Ajansı reported.
Turk said the Hellenic Coast Guard opened fire after the Turkish-flagged ship refused to comply with instructions to dock at the port of Rhodes for an inspection.
The Greek coast guard confirmed the incident, saying it approached the vessel and asked the captain to dock at Rhodes after the authority received an anonymous call saying drugs were being transported.
The captain added that this was a regular route that they use all the time, and they could not figure out the reaction of the Greek coast guard.
The ship was moving towards the Izmit Bay in the Sea of Marmara when coastguard vessels demanded it moor at the port of Rhodes for a cargo check, according to Sputnik News. "They said they would check the ship but we did not accept that. We have escaped a great danger", Kalkavan said.
The sources, who gave information on the condition of anonymity due to restrictions on talking to the media, said two Turkish coastal guard boats and a Turkish assault boat were sent to the area, where the incident happened. The captain of the ship allegedly ignored this demand. They then said they would shoot if we didn't stop and they did what they said. The coast guard then fired shots in the direction of the ship as it was heading to Turkish territorial waters, he added, noting that there were 16 bullet holes in the ship.
The two countries have disputed a portion of territorial waters in the Aegean Sea, exclusive economic zones and territories.
The freighter went into Turkish waters bound for Marmaris.
