Mark Cuban on AI. "It scares the ____ out of me."
CNBC ^ | 7.26.2017 | Catherine Clifford

Posted on 07/26/2017 8:47:25 AM PDT by wildbill

Multi-billionaire tech titan and star of CNBC's "Shark Tank" Mark Cuban says that most people are underestimating the potential of artificial intelligence to change the world we live and work in.

He's especially intimidated by the pace at which new technology advances: "It scares the s--- out of me," says Cuban, speaking to Ozy Fest conference attendees in New York City.

"However much change you saw over the last 10 years with the iPhone, over the last 20 years with the Internet, over the last 30 years with PC's, etc., that is nothing. Nothing!" Cuban says.

Our only possible salvation from the AI robots is if Islam takes over and takes civilization back to the dark ages.

I think this was something of a theme in Dune where great monarchical families had agreed to limit research into AI for fear of it taking over. These families all had very Arabic sounding names.

It’s what sci-fi writers have been predicting for as long as I can remember. We are already bent out of shape when our technology fails us

To say It is not a possibility and not controlling that particular outcome would be a mistake.

Yes. The Butlerian Jihad in Dune was specifically against machines made in the likeness of a man's mind.

Jihad, Butlerian: (see also Great Revolt) — the crusade against computers, thinking machines, and conscious robots begun in 201 B.G. and concluded in 108 B.G. Its chief commandment remains in the O.C. Bible as "Thou shalt not make a machine in the likeness of a human mind."

O.C. means "Orange Catholic" Bible. Frank Herbert mixed and matched his allusions to religions, but you are correct that he dipped heavily into Islamic stuff.

The Fremen on the Spice planet of Arakas were based on muslims and had muslim sounding names and attitudes. Not the noble families.

There is no such thing as true AI. Computers will always be
zero’s and ones programmed to act in such and such a way. What people are scared of is the loss of freedom and individualism as more aspects of life become regulated in the name of safety and uniformity by power mad do good bureaucrats.

The most frightening thing about AI is that the Nation with the least reservations about using it first, will immediately jump out to an enormous advantage over everyone else.

House Atreides
Paul Atreides, the Duke’s son, and main character of the novel.
Duke Leto Atreides, head of House Atreides
Lady Jessica, Bene Gesserit and concubine of the Duke, mother of Paul and Alia
Alia Atreides, Paul’s younger sister
Thufir Hawat, Mentat and Master of Assassins to House Atreides
Gurney Halleck, staunchly loyal troubadour warrior of the Atreides
Duncan Idaho, Swordmaster for House Atreides, graduate of the Ginaz School
Wellington Yueh, Suk doctor for the Atreides, who is secretly working for House Harkonnen

House Harkonnen
Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, head of House Harkonnen
Piter De Vries, twisted Mentat
Feyd-Rautha, nephew and heir-presumptive of the Baron
Glossu “Beast” Rabban, also called Rabban Harkonnen, older nephew of the Baron
Iakin Nefud, Captain of the Guard

House Corrino
Shaddam IV, Padishah Emperor of the Known Universe (the Imperium)
Princess Irulan, Shaddam’s eldest daughter and heir, also a historian
Count Hasimir Fenring, genetic eunuch and the Emperor’s closest friend, advisor, and “errand boy”

A mixture of ethnicities, I’d say, but some of the Noble Houses have names that seem based on Arabic.

Like flying cars from the 1950’s, AI since the 1960’s has been trying to cash checks for gazillions with not a penny in the bank.

As a computer scientist ever since the 1970’s I’ve been watching out for the promised AI revolution and have yet to see it.

Yeah, he mixed them up a little bit but the desert dwelling Fremen were clearly based on islam. Their wars were jihads and their methods were very similar to what we see with today's islamists. Although...Paul Atreides was the Muad'ib (sp?) and the leader of their jihads.

I enjoyed the Dune novels...maybe I should start them again.

I agree that machine consciousness has yet to be observed.

But IBM’s Watson is an amazing knowledge retrieval system. And there are sophisticated decision systems in some tools. And automation is getting rid of a lot of low skill jobs.

We don’t have “thinking machines” but we do have a lot of hardware that can do jobs ( many low end jobs but also an increasing number of high end jobs). As an economic trend, it is something we will have to deal with, and it’s not “over the horizon”. It’s here.

Whatever you tell the program to do, it will do. If you program it to take over the world, even if you don’t know that’s what you’re doing, it will take over the world.

Eventually, the western world will need to find other motivations to live other than with ‘work’ always being the number one reason.
This will be a very difficult sea change in priorities.
Some will refuse to change, with work remaining the top priority for means of survival. Many unemployed will be crowded into the few remaining unautomated job categories.

The most fortunate of this group will have carved out a lucrative niche for themselves. They will do something not yet possible for a machine system to do.
Somewhere down the line, the value of human contact will be ‘rediscovered’ and seen as a most valuable commodity.
