The new US bill on anti-Russian sanctions will affect European countries cooperating with Russia in the energy sector, and, therefore, these restrictive measures can ultimately run counter to international law, German Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy, Brigitte Zypries, said in an interview with the newspapers, which are part of Germanys Funke media group, published on Monday.
"We believe this is a violation of international law," the minister said referring to the fact that the fresh sanctions may restrict companies activities in the EU. "America cannot fine German companies for doing business in another country," she said. "According to Zypries, Europe does not want a trade war with the US, that is why it has always been in favor of coordinated efforts with the US on the sanctions policy issue. In light of this, she recalled that the EU is exploring possible tit-for-tat moves.
The US Senate earlier approved a bill specifying tougher unilateral American sanctions against Russia, Iran and North Korea. Now this document titled "Countering Americas Adversaries Through Sanctions Act" will be submitted to US President Donald Trump for his potential stamp of approval to become law.
Europeans are concerned about the fact that the Nord Stream-2 project is mentioned in the bill, which claims that it has a harmful effect on the European Unions energy security, the development of the gas market of the Central and Eastern Europe and energy reforms in Ukraine. At the same time, the bill states that the US government should prioritize exports of US energy resources to Europe to create jobs in its own economy.
German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel said on Friday that sanctions should not serve the interests of the energy sector. According to Gabriel, if a new package of restrictive measures aimed, in particular, at Russia, affects European companies, Germany will not tolerate that.
Just so we are clear, I don’t give one single flying leap about “international law.”
With that said, Congress driving Europe towards Russia for the purpose of throwing a temper tantrum at Trump is the sort of short sighted idiocy I’ve come to expect from Congress.
And this is why our forefathers gave the Presidency the job of foreign affairs.....not 535 twits who think they know it all.
I swear they pass a new sanctions bill multiple times each year against the same handful of countries, always with overwhelming support too.
The All New Congressional TRADE WAR has begun.
NOT TRUMP’s Trade War.
As with so many disputes elsewhere, this has to do with pipelines. The gas from Russia, if Nordstream II were built, would be much cheaper for Europe than American liquified gas. Russian gas would be coming from a much closer source and would be transmitted via pipeline, whereas American gas wiould originate from a source much further away and would need to be transmitted via tanker.
Naturally, the Europeans are pissed that they would be forced to pay much more for their gas if it came from America, with increased costs for transportation and security for the tankers.
This is what the Syrian war is all about. Should the European market for gas be supplied by Russia and Iran (Iranian pipelines could go through Iraq then Syria, then Turkey), or by the Gulf countries, with US support (although the Gulfies’ hope of building a pipeline through Syria is all but dead now).
Wrong. The US is sovereign and stoping the US would be a violation of International Law. These are DDR Merkel Soviet deep state agents working for the Soviet deep state gangs.
China has the same rhetoric lording over neighbors subtly or overtly and then when the US defends the general interests of those who cannot defend it, the usual Soviets come out saying the US is going for their morcels or
oil.
International law is code word for Soviet wishes

Sorry, you have your facts completely wrong. Many, many European countries oppose the new Russian-German pipe. Germany doesn’t even need more gas. It’s purely a political move to cement Molotov-Ribbentrop 2.0.
Hilarious to see our local Putinists rushing to the defense of KGB Vlad AND Stasi An-gela. LOL.
“America cannot fine German companies for doing business in another country,” she said. “
“International Law” is a figment of peoples’ imagination.
There is no “International Law.” There are individual treaties and generally-agreed upon approaches to things, but that’s it.
