UK citizens ‘should be advised to leave Korean peninsula’
The Government should advise British nationals in the Korean peninsula to leave if the tensions over Kim Jong Un’s nuclear programme continue to ratchet up, a former head of the Royal Navy has warned.
Admiral Lord West of Spithead said there was a “real risk” the current stand off between North Korea and the United States could escalate into an actual conflict, resulting in an exchange of nuclear weapons, with “catastrophic” consequences for the region.
He said advising UK citizens to leave the peninsula and nearby Japan would send a message to the international community that they needed to act to prevent a lurch into all out war.
“When you start giving certain advice to your nationals people start taking notice and maybe China and others will say ‘Goodness me, this is really serious’,” he told BBC Radio 4’s Broadcasting House.
“I would set out a certain number of parameters, that if in terms of tension if things change, and say ‘You should now think about getting out and about other people you should think about not going there’.”
The current Foreign Office travel advice for both South and North Korea notes that tensions “remain high” following the North’s latest nuclear and missile tests but does not advise Britons to leave.
Lord West, however, said he feared chances of a conflict breaking out in the region were now higher than at any time since the end of the Korean War in 1952.

I bet his ‘solution’ involves the impeachment of Trump.
If it reaches the point that residents in Beijing get spooked, it would give China further motivation to cooperate. I think China is still jerking us around. The best they currently want to do is probably to make N. Korea temporarily freeze their missile and nuclear test, and forcing everybody to spin it as his victory and back off from N. Korea.

I thought we were heading toward a conflict, with Guam as the trip-point.
Now Kim has apparently said, North Korea will (not) be targeting a missile toward Guam.
Just a small item, but seems significant. Markets seem to think so.

The difference is that N. Korea is much closer to the finish line than it used to, and the stakes are far larger. The extent of sanctions China is reportedly applying to N. Korea is still lukewarm. Yes, more items are banned for import from N. Korea, and probably additional pressure on some Chinese factories to stop using N. Korean workers. But that would be far short of meaningful sanction. How much do we have to appease China to close down oil shipment even for a few days? For now, there is no indication of China even thinking about it.
Never happen....you're talking two very distinct and vastly different cultures. Africa is an International Welfare Country for the most part throughout....not to mention extremely high illiteracy.... The overall public is accustomed to decades of International Food Programs so the people are ‘fixed’ in their ‘role’. .... Add into that mix are all the conflicts which have raged for years over which next militia groups etc. are going to get the Gov. revenues in their own pockets.....it's not even close to what the S. Korean people are about.

This is a good start. But he has a very huge challenge ahead of him, and both parties are set up to support China bigtime right now.

It’s always good to take a little time and plan ahead, just in case. When I lived in Japan, I took to heart the earthquake disaster plans, drills, and training. That’s where I honed my bugout bag skills, including bags in the car and at work, and I started putting away precious metals. I refreshed my camping skills and equipment. I also studied maps of the local area for backroads, bottlenecks, and footpaths.
It would be wise for all foreigners in South Korea to start thinking ahead about what they would do in an emergency.
They should gradually discourage people from making non-essential trips and encourage people to leave. It would also substantially reduce political panic domestically when evacuation does occur.
I think NEO plans to involve involuntary evacuation should start to take place. Another thing that would turn the Chinese shit white would if the State Department clearly advises NO US citizens to visit or stay in China’s northwest provinces such as Heilongjiang, etc., bordering North Korea. They don’t need to say “why”, just “go there.”

Many media reported that residents in N. East China are terrified of nuclear fallout if N. Korea's nuclear test goes wrong. Now they have to deal with worse cases. Using conventional weapons, U.S. could bomb NK nuclear installations many of which are near Sino-N. Korean border, resulting in a release of radioactive materials. There is also very remote but non-zero chances that they will be hit by U.S. nukes.
