Confederate plaque on Montreal Hudson's Bay store removed

The Hudson's Bay Company has removed a plaque from the company's flagship store in downtown Montreal that commemorates Jefferson Davis, who was president of the Confederate States during the American Civil War.(snip)

The aftermath of the Charlottesville clashes has prompted many to look closer at Confederate monuments in their own neighbourhoods.

The Montreal plaque hung on a wall of the HBC store on Union Avenue. Written in French, it read: "To the memory of Jefferson Davis, president of the Confederate States, who lived in 1867 in the home of John Lovell, which was once here."(snip)

Andrew Papenheim first saw the plaque posted online. He walks down Union Avenue almost daily, and he said that once he knew the plaque was there, it increasingly irked him to see it.

"I'm not sure why we would go out of our way to commemorate this dark and horrible thing. Jefferson Davis was not an honourable man, he committed treason in defence of chattel slavery."

'An offence to me'

Papenheim said he got tired of being upset and decided to find out why the plaque was still on display.

"I wanted to figure out how it was being funded. It was really important to me that we were not spending public funds commemorating this disgusting thing," he said.

Papenheim said Tuesday evening that he's pleased the company took "action so swiftly" and removed the tribute to a man remembered almost solely for trying to destroy the American republic so that southern plantation owners and industrialists could continue to profit from human enslavement.

"I think it's a wonderful move. I think it's a great start for the city. I think it's a positive thing for the city," he said.

We’ve spent years keeping records of events for those to come. Will there be any truth left?

Good, that means Canada is now finally reconsidering their support of the southern insurrectionists during the civil war.

Because if the South had remained in the Union, all the slaves would have suddenly stopped being exploited for profit.

How does that work again? Explain this thing to me.

A Confederate task force used Montreal as a base for an attack on St. Albans, VT. Should Montreal be razed?

Pasty face Andrew looks like he enjoys meeting other men “with similar interests” in public restrooms.

But these hate driven fanatics are not really "liberals."

Study the Civil War enough, and you’ll find a shocking amount of racism came from the Yankees, as well. William T Sherman being one of the best examples.

Not trying to excuse slavery, of course, but just trying to point out that the war wasn’t as black and white as people are making it sound.

The rest of Canada would probably say yes but probably not for that reason.

"...public funds..."

It is an oxidized metal plaque affixed to a wall that noted a historical FACT that occurred on that very spot 150+ years ago.

Public funds? Give me a break.
Heck, it looks like they have not so much as taken a rag, soap, and warm water to that metal tablet in years.

Do these idiots understand that Montreal was founded by the French at a time when the same system, these people are denouncing, in the form of feudal serfdom, still prevailed in France?

Slavery, serfdom, bondage, etc., have existed on much of the earth, through much of the historic period. Why is it suddenly the subject of this adverse focus?

The main difference of the present period is that no one is advocating restoring the system in the West, although it still flourishes in parts of the non-White world.

Of course, we know the answer. But the truth needs to be stated.

Looks like it’s time to buy one of those confederate battle flag front license plates. (I’m in a state where a front licence plate is not required.)

NY Draft Riots involved targeting and lynching blacks.

Time to sink Manhattan.

For pete’s sake.

The Hudson Bay Company ripped off the Indians in the territories for a century and more...not to mention that it is likely their traders who (unknowingly) most often spread the devasting smallpox virus through the Northwest.

Why isn’t the entire store coming down?

Hold off a few weeks. I'm going to Montreal in October.

Though I had no personal knowledge that Sherman had said blatantly racist things, I've found plenty of evidence that the average Northerner hated blacks and didn't give a crap about the fact that they were enslaved. Their objection to slavery was mostly based on their own economic concerns that slaves might be used to undercut their own jobs and wages.

Not trying to excuse slavery, of course, but just trying to point out that the war wasn’t as black and white as people are making it sound.

Slavery was immoral, but it wasn't the reason why the North invaded the South. Stopping their economic independence from Washington DC and New York was the reason the Union invaded the South.
