Former Maricopa County, Ariz., Sheriff Joe Arpaio said Thursday he would be honored if President Trump decided to pardon him following his recent conviction for criminal contempt of court.
In an interview with NPR, the outspoken sheriff said he hasn't spoken with Trump, but was pleased to see reports that the president is on his side.
"It makes me feel good that at least someone is backing me up. And how much better can you get than president of the United States?" Arpaio told NPR.
Trump told Fox News this week he was "seriously considering" a pardon for Arpaio, who he praised as an "outstanding sheriff."
"He has done a lot in the fight against illegal immigration," the president told Fox News. "He's a great American patriot, and I hate to see what has happened to him."
"As far as the situation on a pardon, I didn't ask for it but I will accept it if he does do it," Arpaio said. "This president understands what I've been going through. There aren't many politicians around believe me. I learned that real quick over this situation. You don't see anybody next to me and I've endorsed so many people."
Trump will be in Phoenix for a campaign-style rally Tuesday, and Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton urged the president against announcing a pardon for Arpaio at the event, saying such action would make it "clear that his true intent is to enflame emotions and further divide our nation."
Arpaio, though, said he believes Trump will be the greatest president in U.S. history.
"We need him, and I feel sad how they're trying to destroy him," he said. "It makes me sick. I'll tell you one thing, he's got guts and courage, and that's what this country needs."

IIRC there was crime and corruption going on with the whole Arpaio trial thing — so who is freaking out ?!
It’s the right thing to do.
Obama and Holder wanted to stop any enforcement by anyone against fraudulently documented foreigners.

Sheesh could the timing be any worse. Pardon a guy accused of racial profiling in the middle of this crap storm. Of course he must be pardoned but couldn’t Trump or an ally provide some big gun legal help to win on appeal but on the other hand a pardon would stop all the BS Joe being subjected to.
President Trump should also pardon James O’Keefe of Project Veritas. He was charged only for political reasons.
I think Trump is going to have to pardon him. Arpaio is pretty much begging for it and I can’t imagine that he would embarrass the Sheriff by going to Arizona and NOT giving him the pardon.
And if it pisses off the left then that is even better. I love how easy Trump pisses them off.
Gosh, I haven’t heard Russia in weeks. Trump knows what he is doing. He is brilliant. He makes Reagan look like an amateur.
And look what Phoenix has now, Penzone! A disaster but he fits right in with the Stanton fans.
I like how it's an "In Your Face!" pardon. It's a way of flipping the bird to the left. It shows them their damn railroading intimidation tactics will be opposed. Let them howl! They could not hate the President any worse than they do now. This is a blatant political prosecution. Joe is being hounded because HE INSISTED ON DOING THE RIGHT THING! That is why the prosecution kept it as a misdemeanor. A felony would require a jury and they knew they would not be able to get a unanimous jury in Phoenix.
I only have a few words for PRESIDENT TRUMP;
PARDON SHERIFF JOE.
