If Republican Senate doesn't get rid of the Filibuster Rule & go to a simple majority, which the Dems would do, they are just wasting time!
Trump is right again.
The Swamp doesn’t want to MAGA.
Didn’t work for health care.
Wasting time, and trillions of dollars, is what the Senate does, Mr. President.
There should be a return to the Constitution which required a simple majority.
When is doing something because it’s what the Democrats would do, the smart thing, or the correct thing to do?
When is doing something because its what the Democrats would do, the smart thing, or the correct thing to do?
When you have 52 GOP Senators and it takes 60 votes to end debate on:
Repeal and Replace Obamacare
Trump Income Tax Reduction
Build the Wall
... that’s when. A failure to do so ends any hope of addressing those issues in the Senate. All will be DOA.
Each house shall be the judge of the elections, returns, and qualifications of its own members, and a majority of each shall constitute a quorum to do business; but a small number may adjourn from day to day, and may be authorized to compel the attendance of absent members, in such manner, and under such penalties as each house may provide.
Each house may determine the rules of its proceedings, punish its members for disorderly behaviour, and, with the concurrence of two thirds, expel a member.
Yep, they can certainly operate with a simple majority.
Get rid of the filibuster? That’s one of the Deep State’s powers. Hey, Donald, listen up. It ain’t gonna happen. As George Carlin might say, the Deep State is a big club, and you ain’t in it.
Filibusters only work against Republicans. Democrats can always find RINOs to approve a radical judge, spending for a social program, or any other leftist cause. Democrats stand unified in opposition to anything Republicans want. They just need to get rid of it.
The Democrats called it “The Reid Option”. I call it “The Trump Option”, Mr. President.
If Congress doesn’t pass tax reform, border wall finance, and the Obamacare roll back the republican party will go the way of the Whigs.
The Republican Party is cling hard to the filibuster rule because it is a wonderful excuse for not passing things that the Democrats don’t approve.
And, as stated in clause 2, they can also choose to operate with other than a simple majority.
The Founding Fathers were not enamored of "simple majorities", which is why so many actions laid out in the Constitution require "supermajorities".
“they are just wasting time!”....
One must remember, it’s what they do, waste time!
Turtle-neck, Flinch McConnell, is 100% to blame for the Democrats still controlling the Senate.
No such thing is implied by clause 2. Clearly the majority can set the rules and change the rules, so a majority vote is what’s required by the Constitution, except in those cases specified where a supermajority is required.
Only the GOP is dumb enough to abide by a “shoot yourself in the foot” rule like the current filibuster rule. If Reid hadn’t gotten Obamacare passed via reconciliation, he’d have dumped the filibuster rule. He proved that when he dumped it later for appointments, but only for appointments that mattered at the time.
McConnell was smart enough to dump it for Supreme Court appointments, so there’s absolutely no reason he can’t and shouldn’t dump it for legislation.
As for the GOP not getting rid of Obamacare with a majority, that was a crap piece of legislation they were voting on at the time, and it was only crap because they were trying to abide by the reconciliation procedure. Just dump the filibuster, write a good bill, or a series of good bills, and pass them with a majority vote. This isn’t rocket science. A 7th grade civics class could figure it out.
And if anyone disagrees, please tell me what the justification for maintaining the filibuster is. Certainly the Democrats will cancel it as soon as it’s to their advantage.
