Trump prepares to lift limits on military gear for police

The Trump administration is preparing to restore the flow of surplus military equipment to local law enforcement agencies under a program that had been sharply curtailed amid an outcry over police use of armored vehicles and other war-fighting gear to confront protesters.

Documents obtained by The Associated Press indicate President Donald Trump plans to sign an executive order undoing an Obama administration directive that restricted police agencies’ access to the gear that includes grenade launchers, bullet-proof vests, riot shields, firearms and ammunition.

Trump’s order would fully restore the program under which “assets that would otherwise be scrapped can be repurposed to help state, local, and tribal law enforcement better protect public safety and reduce crime,” according to the documents. […]

The NAACP Legal Defense Fund said in a statement Sunday night that it is “exceptionally dangerous and irresponsible” for the administration to lift the ban.

“Just a few summers ago, our nation watched as Ferguson raised the specter of increased police militarization. The law enforcement response there and in too many places across the country demonstrated how perilous, especially for Black and Brown communities, a militarized police force can be,” the LDF said. …

Well, then we KNOW for sure IT'S the RIGHT THING TO DO!

Thank you President Trump.

With the left declaring war on the police, saying they will kill them at every opportunity, they have only themselves to blame for the escalation.

If they continue to stand down against real violence, what difference does it make?

Antifa is being used to sell the rest of us on this idea. But it’s not Antifa this gear will be used on.

Yeah i’m surprised so many conservatives on the board would be happy about this.

History tells us this won’t be used against violent leftist groups as they protests are almost exclusively in liberal run cities.

The problem with the violent gangs of the left has nothing to do with a lack of gear. It’s more because of the plutocratic weirdo money and influence behind those who are above the law and getting away with the violence.

Trump’s doing this so the police forces feel gratitude towards him. The cops may not be used to put down the scum in the street but with these weapons they at least feel safe.

Let the police escalate up to skip shots with shotguns if necessary to quell riots. Anything beyond that should be handled by the National Guard.

That’s a good point and does make good public affairs sense. Thanks.

That’s not the issue....

The issue is police being ordered to stand down. That’s what needs to be investigated.

The police in Berkley, California do need to be investigated.

Apparently the police department seems to enjoy letting ANTIFA and COP KILLERS BLM attack pro Trump protesters.

This while they stand around peacocking, trying to look tough, after the fact..., and doing absolutely nothing.

I guess the Berkley Police think ANTIFA and BLM will be nice to the local police should a communist revolution kick off?

I am not happy about this.

We just need the police to do their jobs instead of stand down.

They need to uphold their oaths to law and order. Oh and notify the public which stinking politician ordered them to stand down. Don’t hide it.

Agree!

Although I have seen some police departments handle ANTIFA and BLM well. The Berkley police department appears very weak and they let the cop haters run the streets.

AG Sessions needs to ask President Trump to make both ANTIFA and BLM terrorist organizations. Time to arrest their leaders, seize all their assets, interrogate them, and GITMO them.

Furthermore, go after all those involved in the funding and planning. Every last one of them charge them for funding terrorism or planning terrorism.

Lock every one of the dirt bags for the rest of their natural life.
