But then, this thread will revive the legalization of marijuana debate. Lots of people here at Free Republic are very libertarian on the issue. There have been so many threads here in which people cite the 10th amendment or libertarian ideals. So it’s like we’re not allowed to talk about negatives of marijuana, because the 10th amendment or libertarian political philosophy takes priority over any bad news reports such as this.

Just saying, based on past history here, this thread could easily get 200 replies, with back and forth about marijuana legalization.

I thought of that before I posted. But I’m too old to care about the flak, and I’ve seen too many people ruin their lives with that nasty drug. Years ago, the head of student medical services at Cal Berkeley wrote an article about the effects he was documenting in his students. (About 1964 or ‘65). One of the most noticeable changes was to the logic areas of the brain. If you’ve ever personally know a long time, heavy pot user, they will tell you how smart they are, how productive they are, how cool headed they are, etc., etc. Everyone around them observes something far different, however. It’s that ancient river in Egypt again — de-nile!

I’m one of those for legalization, even though I’ve not touched it since 1977 and think it is dumb to do so. But I consider it a LOT safer than alcohol. If we were really serious we would make alcohol illegal. But we don’t for obvious reasons.

Fact is, driving under the influence of anything that affects your brain is bad. Dope is just one of those things. And, truth be told, it is nowhere near as bad as alcohol regarding driving. At the end of the day, however, we need to hold responsible the person that actually does it.

For some perspective, there is actually some quite useful information in this finny video.

You can talk about the negatives all you want. What is upsetting to some Freepers who actually want to live in a free country is that you forget that it isn't the government's job to protect people from their own choices. Tobacco has negatives. Alcohol has negatives. Cough medicine has negatives. Vicodin has (serious) negatives. Operating a motor vehicle at all has negatives, even when you're sober as a judge. If we're going to live in a free country, then "Pot is bad for you!" is not an acceptable argument for giving the government and its law enforcement agents sweeping powers to chuck your butt in jail and take all your stuff.

By the way, in all states where marijuana has been legalized, driving while stoned is still highly illegal.
