NY Daily News to be sold to tronc

The New York Daily News, a tabloid that once boasted one of the highest daily circulations in the nation, has been sold to tronc, the Chicago-based former Tribune Publishing company, the companies said Monday night.

The News, a nearly 100-year-old media company, is based in Manhattan and was owned by Mortimer B. Zuckerman.

“Adding an iconic media property like The Daily News not only expands our tremendous portfolio of newspaper brands, it also allows us to grow our digital platform and broaden our services for advertisers and marketers,” Dearborn said.

Oh, how the mighty have fallen. The NY Times reported the sale price was one dollar plus assumption of liabilities. Karma for all those nasty anti-Trump front pages?

This is reality hitting big media markets like New York. The city doesn’t need 3 or 4 dailies. No one reads them anymore. And the News always struggled to find its niche. It certainly isn’t the conservative paper. And the city’s liberal elites read the NY Times if they want liberal invective. And I guess no one wants a down market, highly partisan liberal paper. They ought to just put it out of its misery. This new company is going to experience nothing but losses too.

It STILL has one of the highest daily circulations in the nation. ALL papers are down (except maybe WSJ). That said, I do remember when the New York Daily News ranked ahead of both the New York Post and Newsday.

The Daily News was once the voice of blue-collar conservatism in New York. The writing was punchy and fun to read. They also had a terrific stable of columnists like Jimmy Breslin who really knew the city. Reading the Sunday News on Saturday night was a common ritual in many homes. But, as the saying goes, "roll left and die". Which they did.

Ironically the NY Post was once a hard left paper. It was weird to see the News and the Post trade ideological places.

They also traded sales positions. When Billy Joel sand “New York State of Mind” he mentions the New York Times and the Daily News, as they were forefront then. Before the big newspaper strike it was hard to even GET the NY post in Connecticut past New Haven. No more.

I know some people in the NYC journalism world and they were shocked and dismayed to hear this news, especially that the buyer is Tronc. They expect mass layoffs at the News. As an influential force in the city it is likely finished.

The NY Daily News used to be a decent paper with good, well written stories. Now, it’s frightfully cookie cutter libtard. It might as well be an official organ of the Dummocrap party. You can predict, without having to read them, that all the stories will be very heavily slanted against Trump, against any conservative, and very pro all causes dear to libtard bleeding hearts. They even have a prominent section called “Immigration Rights”, giving illegal criminal invaders all kinds of helpful advice on how to break U.S. law and hide themselves, etc. I find it physically nauseating now to read the NY Daily News. This paper is now perhaps fit to wipe yourself with and that’s about it. It would be worth more shredded and added to your compost pile than read.

I recall some of their appalling front pages during the presidential campaign. For example they showed a picture of Trump with Sarah Palin captioned “I’m With Stupid”. No attempt at wit, just clubbing you over the head.

There's a reason why half of the top 10 (and not including the WSJ) are New York papers. New Yorkers ride subways. The Times is not a tabloid yet, and the New York Post is not to everyone's taste. Yes, under 300,000 is a shadow of its former greatness, especially as advertising dollars have dried up simultaneously, but people still pick up the newspaper in NYC enough to keep three dailies going.

In a way, the Daily News has come full-circle, as it was founded by the same family that founded the Chicago Tribune. I remember reading the Daily News as a kid, and being amazed that the New York papers didn't have a decent comics page among them. The New York Times had none at all, of course, and the Daily News even then mostly ran comics that were distributed by the Chicago Tribune, whose biggest hits were established long ago (Little Orphan Annie, Dick Tracy, Gasoline Alley, Dondi). Heck, you couldn't even get Peanuts!

Zuck ran the paper poorly, so I don't see it going down anymore, but then, I haven't lived in the region for a while, so what do I know?

A few decades ago, the Nielsen Numbers of the top rated TV shows would have been "nothing". The fact remains that only seven newspapers in the country sell more than the New York Daily News. Actually, 300K readers is the number sold. Many newspapers are read by more than one person. Publishers will have to find a way to make the new smaller numbers work, since the glory days of 3 million in sales each day are long gone.

Even the newer comics they ran were losers (Tiger, Boner's Ark), about as close to generic comics as they came.

Wow! The end of the newspaper era. I started reading the Daily News when I was 6 years old! Haven’t touched it for the past 20 years, though.
