CATO - The Economic and Fiscal Impact of Repealing DACA
The CATO Institute ^ | January 18, 2017 | Ike Brannon and Logan Albrigh

Posted on 09/08/2017 8:34:19 AM PDT by Wuli

Donald Trump has proposed eliminating or severely modifying the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. Many Americans believe that the presence of unauthorized immigrants is harmful to the economy and would like to see steps taken to reduce their presence. However, a repeal or roll-back of DACA would harm the economy and cost the U.S. government a significant amount of lost tax revenue. We estimate that the fiscal cost of immediately deporting the approximately 750,000 people currently in the DACA program would be over $60 billion to the federal government along with a $280 billion reduction in economic growth over the next decade.

I only gave the opening paragraph.

I posted this after learning today of CATO's having joined the ranks of the pro-Islamists.

But the key, to me, is in the concluding part of the CATO piece on the $$$ costs of ending DACA.

"We submit that any such costs are far outweighed by the benefits that come from immigrants who are able to work openly and legally, pay taxes, support entitlement programs, create jobs, innovate, and sire children who will one day do the same."

It has been my impression for years that CATO was most of all about supporting LIBERTY.

Yet the author of the DACA piece seems to be of a a mind that the purpose of government policy is NOT about Liberty, but channeling decisions to support taxation to support the big government and it's entitlement welfare state. He writes of that as the end purpose, NOT Liberty, of a "growing economy".

Not at all of how a true Libertarian would see it in my mind.

Funny!

The disingenuous CATO only accrues lost revenue. They say NOTHING about government expenditures and social costs.

We SPEND more on them than is received from them.

You could even call CATO liars by omission.

Ah yes, the same old zero-sum game again. Did they ever consider that by having to pay higher wages to American Citizens while also reducing the welfare rolls that it might mean more tax revenue rather than less.

Of course not, that takes just too danged much thinking outside the globalists tiny box. As for your impression that CATO is Libertarian, that ship sailed a number of years ago if you have been paying attention. I suspect that Soros has his tentacles inside that organization as well.

“President Obama created the DACA program in 2012 via executive action. DACA’s objective was to allow American residents who entered the country illegally as children to receive temporary protection from deportation, work permits, and an incentive to invest in their own human capital.”

“President-Elect Donald Trump has taken an absolutist position on the issue, vowing not only to build a wall with the intent of greatly reducing illegal entry from the Mexican border, but also to unilaterally nullify President Obama’s executive actions dealing with immigration, including the action which spawned DACA.”

Note the TONE in the above...it says much more about them than just their position on the issue. Here’s a summary:

President Obama was trying to ‘help’ these children, while President Trump took an ABSOLUTIST POSITION to UNILATERALLY NULLIFY President Obama’s ‘executive actions’. (as if there was nothing unilateral about DACA in the first place)

Ladies and Gentlemen - CATO IS LOST TO US. The Left has, once again, seized an institution that used to support our values (or at least many of our values).

Cato resorts to straw men once again.

You don't have to deport them. Just stop giving them free stuff. They'll know what to do.

Cato went off the deep end several years ago when they started pushing fag “marriage.” It’s only gotten worse.

Ridiculous. I’d do it for cost plus 10%, with a ceiling of one billion.

“along with a $280 billion reduction in economic growth over the next decade.”

Yeah, because there aren’t any white male Americans who would like to have those jobs.

Per capital income increase when 800,000 leave the USA. Wages go up also. There is less crime and less need for taxes. win win win all the way around.

"Libertarianism is the view that each person has the right to live his life in any way he chooses so long as he respects the equal rights of others. Libertarians defend each person’s right to life, liberty, and property-rights that people have naturally, before governments are created. In the libertarian view, all human relationships should be voluntary; the only actions that should be forbidden by law are those that involve the initiation of force against those who have not themselves used force-actions like murder, rape, robbery, kidnapping, and fraud."......it is the legality of a US citizen....I don't think Libertarianism is meant for non-citizens who are illegal....

At some point, DACA which is unconstitutional and foisted illegally on the American system by Barack Obama, should be abolished in favor of a "Grandfathered system" of green card laborers, not citizenship...that can only be obtained by entering through the front door regardless of how the illegal got here.

Obama's lack of respect for legality as potus, should net him jail time for criminal intent.

Washington, DC 20001-5403

Come anytime, they don't believe in borders so they obviously shouldn't have security, if you need cheap office supplies and live in DC this is the perfect place to pick some up, though you may need a brick to unlock the door....

Cato is about as libertarian as the Libertarian Party. Both confuse "liberty" with "no rules of conduct". The difference between the two is that Cato is more oriented toward no rules of conduct for business; while the Libertarian Party is more oriented toward no rules of conduct for individuals.

“CATO IS LOST TO US. The Left has, once again, seized an institution that used to support our values (or at least many of our values).”

Yep. Another one bites the dust. As more university-indoctrinated minions fill management ranks, more once-conservative organizations are infected. Most of our Christian church HQs fell ill many years ago ago. And our government is deeply infected will multiple diseases.

How is this massive, systemic infection to be cured? That’s our big question.
