More than 50 animals found tethered to trees in Florida county

Animal control officers in Palm Beach County say they are seeing animal abuse like they’ve never experienced before.

Palm Beach County Animal Care reports animal control officers have rescued 49 dogs and two cats in the last 48 hours, according to WPTV. Local animal officials reported finding dozens of dogs chained to trees and parked cars as thousands of people flee the Sunshine State.

High winds have now made it impossible for animal control officers to respond to these calls. County Director of Animal Care Diane Suave said she is encouraging anyone to shelter animals they see tethered outside.

I really don’t get what is wrong with people. If they can’t take their animals with them, fine, drop them off at an animal shelter, don’t leave them outside, alone to drown in the flood Good Lord some people

Why bother owning a pet if you're not going to treat it like this? What possible excuse could there be for any pet owner not to take their dog or cat with them when they flee a natural disaster?

People who mistreat or neglect pets they've deliberately chosen to take responsibility for, pets who trust them and depend on them, are not likely to treat their fellow man much better.

I suspect we’re not looking at middle/upper-class people here.

People who haven’t given a rats ass to plan a better life for themselves, won’t care more for their animals.

I would probably own about 50 dogs after something like this, at least temporarily.

Pook would have been in the cab of the truck with me, but it was just the 2 of us.

People are fleeing for their lives.
No excuse for leaving the critters on a leash though with no chance at all

Not the best thing for animals. However, there are bigger fish to fry. There is a relevant Portlandia episode: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-J2Fo7tl3LA

Yep...I would’ve hauled all I could away...Eventually, finding shelters or good homes for them...

Exactly.

I’d keep a few of the best ones though.

#3: "Why bother owning a pet if you're not going to treat it like this?"

It's way more common than you'd think. I've met so many people who treat their pets as just a "thing", more of their "stuff". Really. For example weird people getting bored with their family dog, so they give it to a shelter and buy a new, more fashionable breed.

For many folks, a dog or cat is just another accoutrement, a fashion statement, but excess baggage in times of crisis. The worst thing for any breed is to get featured in a popular movie or TV show.

Sounds like the cock-fighting crowd to me. What they lack in common sense, they make up for in cruelty.

Our next-door neighbors moved 3 days ago and just abandoned their indoor cat outside. So it didn’t eat for two days til we realized it was on the deck by the door waiting for somebody to let it in. Now we are feeding it and trying to figure out what to do before the tropical storm hits tomorrow.

We have had people leave dogs inside our fenced in community dog park and drive away, knowing there is a large population of animal lovers here. It’s heartbreaking to see these dogs waiting and watching for their family to return for them, not understanding they’ve been dumped.

Bring it in. Feed it the stinkiest cat treats you can find for a short while along with dry cat food.

If you do not want the cat, take it to the animal shelter or try and find a home for it by yourselves after its all over.

Your gonna need a litter box. A simple square plastic dish pan will do with some floor dry type cat litter.

The great thing with dogs and cats is they forget fast if they are left and others rescue them.

Animals live mostly for the moment and if things get better they forget the past.
