A friend of mine rescued a little Shih Tzu that was wandering alongside the road near her house. She said the little guy was very grateful, but was obviously still waiting for someone to come back for him, to the point that she knew exactly what the “dumper” had been driving...a white Ford F-150 truck. The dog reacted every time he saw that type of vehicle drive by the house. Whenever she took him outside to walk, he would pull her down the driveway to the road and sit down to wait. She eventually got him to a no-kill rescue, so I dont know what happened to him.

Someone chained their cat to a tree?

Their owners should be chained to whatever trees are still standing after Irma. For a week or ten. Bring back public stocks.

This is why I love my animals or ANY animals more than I love some humans!! NO EXCUSE for this and the owners should be identified and thrown in jail when this is over!!!

If I had control of the lightning, those people would be struck dead.

I KNEW that was going to happen and questioned it last week! People who have animals and confine them to dog houses in the back yard do not deserve them as pets...........

Part of a text from a friend in FL yesterday morning:

"It's easy to get a hotel room unless you have a pet".

That's no excuse for chaining your pet to a tree and fleeing, but it sure doesn't help the problem. Maybe more legislation - during mandatory evacuation hotels MUST take pets - charge extra if they must but take guests and pets. They can have their no-pet policy the rest of the time.

I know several who do but the dogs are not pets, they are working livestock guardian dogs and would not be able to do their jobs if they were in the house.

On the other hand those dogs get the best of care, probably eat better then most people and get a going over daily to make sure they didn't get so much as a nick.

Why bother owning a pet if you're not going to treat it like this?

Probably 50% of dog owners are not responsible enough to own a dog. No joke.

Option 1: Your pets are family, and you bring them with you.

Option 2: Your pets are critters you cared about, and you drop them off at an animal shelter if you cannot take care of them.

Option 3: Your pets are accessories that look good in photos, and you set them free outside to fend for themselves when you don’t want to take the time to do more for them.

Option 4: Your pets are in the way, and you tie them to a tree, in a hurricane, where they are likely to die.

The first two options are satisfactory. Option 3 is pretty disgusting, but option 4 is just plain evil. Whether it’s storm surge drowning them, flying debris beating them to death, or wind battering them against the tree they are tied to, animals don’t have a chance if they are tied up in the open. I cannot imagine being either stupid enough to do that or hating a pet enough to do that. I don’t have it in me to understand what passes for thought in the mind of a democrat.

A few days ago, one of the low-life neighbors abandoned their home, their stuff and their dog. The dog was running loose and we live on a very busy main Street, so we took him in. He is full of bites, has an allergy rash all over his body and feet, his ears were cropped too short. He either has fungus infections in his ears, or ear mites. We gave him a bath, slathered him in olive oil for skin relief, and in case of mites, gave him some allergy tablets from the vet and his skin began to clear up.

He’s a most excellent dog, but hasn’t been worked with much beyond potty training and not treating up trash. He is a welcome addition to my home, gets along very well with my other dog, is very mellow and isn’t destructive. He has a few things to learn like walking on a leash without dragging me down the road..he’s big and powerful..but I really like him, he really likes me, too. He has no idea he was abandoned Wich is a merciful thing. I took him to his house and let him wander around and see that nobody is there.

He seems very happy to be with us though, gets fed and has a bed of his own indoors. No more chigger bites for this poor guy!

I once had a dachshund that we took to a beach vacation rental for a week. The next year, we stayed at the same beach but at another rental. The dog kept making the turn to the prior rental each time we passed the street on our walks.

Hugs to you. Hugs to poochie.

We have had three separate neighbors who treated their dogs badly so their dogs would break out and come to our house. One, the man put us in his Will to take his dog but before he died, the wife killed the dog. Sweetest thing. Another, we moved and they wouldn’t let us have her. This last one, the neighbors blocked all his escape routes. A fourth one scratches at the gate to come visit whenever they’re down so they’ve had to block the gate.

All our animals have been strays and I wouldn’t trade them for anything.

BTW, all the Hemmingway cats are fine. All the staff are fine. The house is fine.

I can’t imagine the terror of an animal outside in rising water and whistling gales with no way to escape. A critter has to have hope to survive. Grrrrr!
