NFL opening weekend sees more Star-Spangled Banner protests

Los Angeles (AFP) - Seattle's Michael Bennett and Oakland's Marshawn Lynch joined other NFL athletes Sunday in protesting the treatment of minorities by US law enforcement during the first weekend of the regular season.

Both Bennett and Lynch remained seated during The Star-Spangled Banner before the Seahawks and Raiders season-opening games as part of a continuing wave of protests that began last year with former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick.

Bennett sat as teammate Justin Britt stood next to him with his hand on his shoulder while another teammate, Thomas Rawls, stood on Bennett's other side before the game against the Green Bay Packers.

Bennett's brother, Martellus, who plays for the Packers, stood at the end of the Green Bay bench with his right fist in the air.

Two weeks ago, Bennett was detained on a Las Vegas street for about 10 minutes by police

Bennett has alleged that he had been the victim of racial discrimination after being threatened at gunpoint by the police. He said they "singled" him out for "nothing more than being a black man in the wrong place at the wrong time."

Police denied the charge and said Bennett was detained briefly because he was spotted running from the police before jumping over a wall. Bennett was handcuffed but police did not arrest or charge him.

Raiders runningback Lynch also sat during the anthem just like he did a number of times during the preseason. Lynch, unlike Bennett, has declined to discuss his reasons for doing so.

In Cleveland, players linked arms with police, military and firefighters during the anthem before the Browns' opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers. No players knelt during the song.

Philadelphia Eagles safety Malcolm Jenkins and Los Angeles Rams linebacker Robert Quinn also raised their fists

If the NFL were at all smart, they would just say: “This is over. We’re done. Five game suspension for any player who disrespects the national anthem. Take it up with your coach. If the team has a problem enforcing this, that’s $10M fine, right there. We’re done with this.”

So Bennet was inconvenienced for ten minutes and that is why he’s having a hissy fit?

After an amazing Superbowl, with an improbable win, I was looking forward to an awesome season of entertainment.

If I want to watch paid protesters I can go to Berkeley...

The NFL needs to make all players watch the Smithsonian channel 911 documentary. It makes you so mad that these spoiled brat players can act like that after watching the whole day in intimate detail via this documentary. It’s an excellent documentary. Highly recommend.

If the NFL wonders why it’s losing viewers and attendance...look no further than it’s players offending and disrespecting over half it’s fans......or should I say former fans

I’ll stick to NASCAR where they say a prayer and sing the National Anthem before each race

End of my rant

I do not understand how the NFL can allow the players to “protest” on company time, while in uniform.

If the players wish to protest, they should do it on their own private time, when they are not “working”, otherwise they represent the team during game time.

People who actually work for a living would not be able to get away with this farce.

1. The NFL employs thousands of black people, from at minimum middle class positions in the NFL organization, to multi-million dollar contract player positions.

2. Hundreds of players are drafted every season, with about half of those drafted black men.

3. The NFL causes hundreds to thousands of other black men to be hired in other secondary organizations, such as the media, with at least a middle class salary, all the way to multi -million dollar contracts for prime jobs.

4. The NFL is the pinnacle of an entire sport where hundreds of thousands of young men learn discipline, delayed gratification, and go through the school system in order to achieve their dreams, even if they don't make it to the NFL.

5. The integration of baseball, the military, and football played a critical role in the last century, allowing contact between races and watching black men striving to achieve on an equal paying field.

Conclusion: Obviously, the NFL must be destroyed by petty politics.

Winning races in high-performance machines requires a lot more brains than football.
