Free Republic used to have its own Sons of Paterno who rode to the defense of Ol’ Joe and the Penn State Football program at a moment’s notice.

Yep. He knew, but we had our own disgusting child rape enablers here at FR, mainly fljoepa.

When sports rises above care, you know you are one sick individual. When you defend pedophiles, you are just as damnable.

To hell with JoePa, PSU, and pedophile enablers like fljoepa.

And NO I didn’t go to PSU

‘There will never be another school that gets the death penalty now.’

what should get the death penalty is the system of using colleges as minor league proving grounds; let the professional leagues maintain their own chain of supply, as baseball has done for years...

and pigs should have wings, and be able to fly...

‘What makes you think it wouldn’t have been the same at any major college FB Power?’

most major CFB powers don’t spend 40+ years burnishing their own self-images as shining cities on the hill among the sleaze of crass commercialism; most fan bases are more jaded and less clannish than PSU’s...

Men of Joe P.’s generation were not raised drowning in filth, the way most boys and girls are today. Whatever he may have been told about Sandusky, the important thing in terms of his culpability was what he believed, and I’m not one to judge him too harshly in this regard.

And while all turned to look the other way, a new crop of budding pedophiles were being spawned by Sandusky. Those who don't grow up to repeat his disgusting proclivities will go on to live shattered lives - all because people turned the other way.

>>Ethics is a moral dilemma. Paterno faced no dilemma. His failure to act was a felonious moral failure.<<

Maybe so. The initial issue being discussed was whether Pete Rose and Joe Paterno had a similar category of failings. A bit esoteric I admit but it had evolved to that point.

Ain’t talking about their images I am talking about what would have occurred under the same circumstances

instead, they hired a coach (the cultists ran the first one out of town) with his own scandal

Just curious. What is James Franklin's scandal?

[And yet you will still find tens of thousands of “sports fans” who will willingly give Paterno a “pass” despite his disgusting behavior.]

It sure was convenient how Sandusky went to prison without any other names coming out as to who was involved in the pedophile ring.

Sandusky doesn’t get away with what he did for as long as he did without help from some very important people.

Their “ethical lapses” aren’t comparable.

I think you're missing the point.

We're talking about Penn State.

I remember one of them posting that the uproar sent poor Joe to an early death. I pointed out that “poor Joe” was 83 years old and had terminal cancer.

Some thought he was immortal. Me? Not so much.

I think Bill O’Brien was the coach following Paterno. Not sure you could say he ‘got run out of town’. Just clarifying who followed who.

We think along the same lines. A lot of n important people sat on the Board of the foundation setup by Sandusky. Paterno wasn’t the only person who failed to know (or suspect) something wasn’t quite right

Okay but the sentence implies the coach after O'Brien (who would be James Franklin) has some scandal. I'm just curious what it is. There might be one but I'm unaware of it.

Sorry, I even heard a player interviewed one time who said that he thought it odd that Sandusky traveled with a little boy. Sandusky is a monster, and all those who looked the other way, especially Paterno, are vile.
