Sixteenth anniversaries are not noted.
Anniversaries divisible by five (5, 10, 100, 150, etc.) are granted special significance. I do not know why that is, but it is.
Today marks the 16th anniversary of what has become known as 9/11. Say it in the United States and anyone who is old enough to remember the year 2001 knows exactly what you mean. And exactly where they were. And exactly who was lost.
This is a reprise of the column I wrote for the ensuing Saturday - September 15. It was about the President, George W. Bush, going to Ground Zero, draping his arm over the shoulders of a retired firefighter named Bob Beckwith, and through a megaphone told the crowd, some of whom had shouted that they couldn't hear him, "I can hear you! The rest of the world hears you! And the people - and the people who knocked these buildings down will hear all of us soon."
I thought, with two major hurricanes still draining into the Gulf of Mexico, with a crazy person running North Korea, and with Official Washington trying to figure out what Donald Trump will do next, it might be helpful to take a breath and remember a day that made us all proud.
It was titled "164."

Wars start with old men telling young men there is a great cause.
Young men run tell their young women they are answering the call.
In the movie "Gone with the Wind," Charles Hamilton says to Scarlett: "Miss 0' Hara! Miss 0' Hara, isn't it thrilling? Mr. Lincoln has called the soldiers, volunteers to fight against us." Then he says, "But it's war, Miss O'Hara! And everybody's going off to enlist, they're going right away. I'm going, too!"
And so, with the bands playing and the flags waving, the Scarlett O'Haras and the Charles Hamiltons embrace and she waves goodbye to her man as he leaves, depending upon where they are in history, on horseback or in a Humvee.
And many times it IS a great cause and it IS a worthy call, as this present crisis. And most times it IS good against evil. And most times good DOES emerge victorious.
But soon the bands pack their instruments, and the organizers furl the flags, and the women go home to, again depending upon where they are in history, mind the garden, or run GM or Pepsico, or Germany.
The young men went off to the war. Now, the young men and the young women go off to the war. And the war is often a horror.
Stephen Ambrose, in his gripping book "D-Day" makes the point that nearly all of the soldiers who went onto the beaches in the first wave were novices - they had not previously been in battle. Because experienced soldiers, knowing what they would be facing, might not have gotten off the boats.
A War on Terrorism is not like the War on Drugs or the War on Poverty. Like so much else in the last third of the 20th Century, the overuse of the word "War" has devalued the meaning of the word "War."
Nor will a War on Terrorism be, we have already seen in excruciating close-up, like the Gulf War when the Army, Air Force, and Naval personnel drove through the sand, flew over the sand, or sailed abreast of the sand of the Middle East, while the rest of the country, in effect, hit out of the sand on the 16th hole of their country club.
President Bush, who was wrongly accused to ducking the whole thing on Tuesday afternoon, toured the ruins of the southern end of Manhattan Island on Friday afternoon.
He stood among the strong men and women, mud-splattered from digging in the rubble, hopeful and happy as their Commander-In-Chief stood among them; on a pile of the same broken concrete on which they have ripped their hands. He stood among them in a windbreaker. Speaking through a bullhorn. His arm was draped around retired firefighter Bob Beckwith the way men do when they are comfortable being around other men.
The workers were in hardhats of blue, green, white, yellow, and every other color of the spectrum. Some of them - perhaps many of them - may be soon trading those hardhats for black berets and olive drab helmets.
One, a hard hat still on his head, told a TV reporter how thrilled he was about having had had his picture taken with the President. He said it made him think about how far he has come. He was an African-American. I made me think about how far America has come.
He didn't appear to be concerned about the whereabouts of Air Force One on Tuesday. He was thrilled about the whereabouts of its principal passenger on Friday.
U-S-A! U-S-A! They chanted the way strong men and women do when they are standing among broken stones and broken bodies.
As a nation we know what we have to do. And we know whom we have to send. And we know what the inevitable toll will be for many of them and for many of us.
The firefighter standing next to the President was an older man. He was not stage dressing.. He had goggles and a respirator dangling from his neck. His helmet was not colorful. It looked like firefighters' helmets have looked, more or less, for generations: Black leather. Bill around back. Shield on the front: 164.
He could have stepped out of a Norman Rockwell painting.
A lot of us are 164.
Perhaps 164 has a son or daughter who will go to this war. And 164 will, as all of us will, be proud of that child. And he will pray for the safety of his child, as all of us will pray for the safety of everyone's child.
But let us remember, as we proceed into this war, that there will be more days like Tuesday. Bad days.
And there will be more days like Friday. Good days.
And when our children come home the young men will have old eyes from what they have seen. They will meet their young women who will have old hearts from what they have feared.
Our job, then, will begin. Our job will be to stand, like 164: Seasoned. Proud. Knowing what they know, having seen what they have seen, and having been afraid of what they have feared.
When the bad days come, we who are like 164, will have the job of soothing the eyes, and softening the hearts. We, too, are ready.

The Dims, left, commies, socialists, homos, ets. have joined the Gee-hod-ist and are doing everything they can to destroy the Republic which gives, yes GIVES them, every stinking dime they have. These fools think the Muzzies are going to love them and thank them for helping destroy the nation. But, boo, they ain’t going to thank them one bit. They are going to slice their heads off for being non-Muzzies. God has already turned them over to a reprobate mind. Scripture said He would and He has. We have not learned very much after over 5,000 military lives lost and trillions down the drain by giving Iraq back to the Gee-hods. Nope, stupid is as stupid does. America in the 2000’s. Yippie ki yea.

I will turn on the TV later, and undoubtedly get angry at the lack of coverage of the mass murder by m*slims on 9/11. The media deliberately suppress all mention of killings done by m*slims. When they can’t suppress it entirely, they change it to something mild, like “the day planes flew into buildings.”
They are still obsessing over Irma. They don’t give a $hit over the loss of life. The reason is to provide a background for the endless discussions of “climate change” that will be taking place for the next 3 months.
The new found American resolve after 9-11 has been wasted. More American lives and treasure squandered for no certain benefit. American freedoms have been eroded in the name of security. I have no solution, it seams no one else has. Return to faith and prayer for guidance is needed.

One thing W said that still rings true to me was that this was going to be a shadow war, one that could go for decades or generations. I had no idea they would come as close to winning as they have.
Unfortunately complacency started showing and "religion of peace" syndrome crept into people. The Muslims put a full press in PR to hoodwink the media,left and politicians and it has worked very well to this day. The other disaster that is killing us is the u-turn from Afghanistan into the invasion of Iraq. I was never against it per say (but I was deployed),but hindsight is sobering. It has not helped that our liberties and our Constitution has also been the incidental victim to all of this. There is no such thing as do-over but 16 years since has brought America to a crossroads.
Odd coincidence:
On 9/11/01 I had a dentist appointment on the hour, between the 2 strikes on the twin towers.
This morning at that same hour I was back in the same dentist chair.
Correct, yet incorrect. A phobia is an irrational or unwarranted fear, fear of something that should not frighten you. Since it is neither unwarranted nor irrational to fear a system which demands that you be dominated, enslaved or killed if you reject it, there is no Islamophobia.
