Let's Keep Investing in the World's Poor
Wall Street Journal ^ | Sept 15 2017 | Bill & Melinda Gates

...President Donald Trump has recommended a cut of some 30% to the State Department’s budget, which includes the funding for the U.S. Agency for International Development and most of America’s investments in global health. Congress is unlikely to go along with such large cuts, but our best guess is that, by the time the dust settles, key foreign-aid programs will be scaled back. Even modest cuts would represent the reversal of a long-term trend of increasing U.S. support for foreign aid, and a similar mood of retrenchment has taken hold elsewhere. In the U.K., the world’s second-largest aid donor, there has been heated public debate about the value of foreign assistance, but the government has held the line on its commitments.

"If you subsidize something, you tend to get more of it." - G. Gordon Liddy

We could throw our entire Treasury and Gross National Product into the various corrupt, tyrannical regime in the world and it would do nothing but perpetuate the misery while despots enjoy lifestyles that would embarrass Caligula.

How can poverty be addressed without dealing with the cause? How do you think America became so wealthy? Because we're better at exploitation as the Left likes to suggest? If that were the case, the former Spanish colonies would be rolling in wealth. They are economic basket cases because their governments are highly centralized, have tentacles in all aspects of society and are rotten with corruption.

It is no coincidence that the Industrial Revolution were contemporary with the American Revolution. Once it became possible to attain economic success through invention, hard work, creativity, etc. instead of by birth or political intrigue, the bar of what was possible was raised exponentially. An essential part of the American dream is that anyone can attain and create wealth.

American society declined on all levels under #Obamanation because we embraced collectivism and reverted to group identity over equality under the law. Yes indeed poverty abroad is a threat to us all. Throwing money at it to make ourselves feel better is not the solution; freedom is.

But the Left is squeamish about 'interfering' with other governments -- unless they are friendly to the United States. If they are hostile, we are supposed to buy their love. All we get in return is contempt and bloodshed.

Yes, by all means, let’s keep squandering “our” money on people who, even after generations of handouts, can’t seem to hold a job or contribute anything positive to society. That doesn’t seem at all like a bottomless pit ...

“”Let’s Keep Investing in the World’s Poor””

Right Bill Gates. I think Bill Gates really meant to say “Let’s Keep Investing in the World’s Rich.”

This State Department hands out foreign aid so rich people can sell their products throughout the world.

When Gates,Zuckerberg or Soros announce that they're giving a billion to some organization that may,or may not,be respectable I'm not even slightly impressed.

What *would* impress me is if any one of them were to *secretly* give all but,say,$10 million of his net worth and all but $250K of each year's gross income to reputable organizations that provide food, water, health care, housing and basic education to the poor of Africa and Asia.

Announcements such as the ones they've made in the past are meant to boost their own egos, not do anything necessary, worthwhile and achievable.

“He’s free to do that with his 80 billion.”

The Left doesn’t believe in voluntary charity; they believe in forced subsidization of Entitlement.

Fighting the spread of contagious diseases is good.

Left unchecked, with global travel, those could spread worldwide.

However, American dollars should not be spent to increase the prosperity of falsely romanticized people in faraway lands, because it doesn’t work, and more importantly, those dollars should be used to help people in this country.

Outrageous foreign aid and supporting the hostile invaders in our country are two of my sore spots.

Trump is right; it’ time to put America and Americans first!
We need to take care of our own!
For instance our elders, who fought to keep this country free and help make it the greatest country the world has ever known, must live on starvation pensions!

Bill, please define investing in the poor. We have done that forever and the poor are still poor.

“Falsely romanticized” is an excellent term. The bleeding heart liberals would have everybody believe these people will be living in a nuclear family and starting productive businesses shortly, if only enough money is thrown at them.

There are lots of white Americans going down for the third time.

How about investing in them, you smug, sanctimonious, virtue-signalling chunk of sh*t?

That’s a terrible “investment”. You might as well “invest” with Oscar the Grouch by putting your cash in the trash.

What filters or Gateways do U.S. tax dollars have to pass through to get to the world’s poor? And in what form is that help that we send to the world’s poor? Is it money? Is it a electronic deposit to some Bank in a foreign country? Do we ever see where that money is being used?

Where is this money being used primarily? To prop up regimes, Warlords, or Dictators? Corruption abounds on a global scale and if you’re telling us that these monies are going to the poor yet, we always see in these countries that people remain poor, or that they are under fed, or they are starving, and their situation never changes.

What that tells me is that this money is not being used for what it was intended. So perhaps it is not a bad idea (certainly a logical one) to stop the flow of money. Instead of sowing into pockets of corruption.

there are other ways to help the poor in these countries and it is not money directly. it’s bringing tools needed so that they can provide for themselves.
