The 'Good Monk' Myth [Burma and Rohingya]
The Atlantic ^ | September 29, 2017 | Joe Freeman

One night in Rangoon last year, I met up for beers with a man who had participated in Burma’s Saffron Revolution, which saw tens of thousands of Buddhist monks and nuns protest the former junta, prompting a brutal military crackdown 10 years ago this week. That I was meeting a monk for beers may seem odd, but this one had long since left the monkhood. Still, it felt like a bit of a metaphor for the unexpected ways Burma has changed, and for the country’s lack of a fairy-tale ending.

Burma is defending itself from ISIS inspired Islamic terror and insurgency so the Left is working overtime to wash their hands of Burma and Aung San Suu Kyi. The Left luvs the stereotype of Buddhism as a bunch of robbed monks mediating and praying in temples but God forbid if Buddhist rise up to defend themselves.

The article is written from a PC perspective. As such it is essentially unreadable. It mischaracterizes the Saffron Monks as vaguely utopian while disparaging their wholly justified opposition to Islam in their midst, as though they were insufficiently open minded and tolerant. When a murderer is beating down your door it is not helpful to tolerate his actions.
The monks seek democracy. Muslims do not.

Exactly right. Islam has to dominate the state wherever it is.

Buddhists generally just have a “live and let live” attitude about life and other people.

Liberals love to meddle in other people’s lives and tell them how to live. So does ISLAM.

That is the WHY of it!

Western liberal understanding of Buddhism is the “Bay Area yoga and coffee-shoop version.” They don’t have a clue.

Its influence on the culture of Burma and other nations can only be understood in its totality - like the influence of Christianity on middle-ages Europe.

The Burmese remember very well the Muslim conquest of South Asia, especially as it effected them from the 13th century onwards

The Muslims in Burma deserves a better life in Bangladesh. Away from all the problems posed by non-Muslims in Burma.

The Burmese have been oppressing all minorities in Burma since the 50’s. The Burmese Army is a pretty unsavory crew
as anyone who remembers the wars against the Keren will recall.

Islam has been in a long hard war against Buddhism for a thousand years - up to today.
