As President Trump enters the stretch run of his first year in office, two big things are clear. He has not lost his remarkable instinct for reading the public mood, but neither has he found a way to harness that instinct into a successful governing formula.
Those two threads of his presidency were on vivid display last week. Trumps attack on NFL kneelers looked like a throwaway line in a political endorsement, then suddenly exploded into a new front of the culture wars.
Those betting he had goofed learned nothing over the last two years. Theyre still drinking the Kool-Aid of the NeverTrumpers who insisted he could not win the GOP nomination or the White House.
But even now, it pays to remember there is a reason Trump won 30 states against Hillary Clinton and, no, its not the Russians or James Comey or sexism. Its that Trump understood then and still does how to give voice to the anger and angst of many middle- and working-class Americans who believe their government betrayed them and their nation is leaving them behind.
His zeroing in on the NFL players protesting during the national anthem is just the latest example. The participants were few, but Trump recognized the insult to flag and country.
His framing of the issue as a matter of patriotism caught star athletes and NFL bosses off guard, and their first reaction was a good imitation of Low Energy Jeb Bush and others who underestimated the power of Trumps punches.
Soon enough, though, loud fan booing, bonfires of NFL tickets and declining TV ratings got the games attention.
Polls show that a big majority of the public is strongly in Trumps camp,

Good summation.
He made few promises, and only swore a few solemn oaths during his election. And those promises are what got him elected.
Hold firm on immigration
Build that Wall
This Goodwin guy runs his business on emotions, rather than facts.
An article about Trump, his goals and the word “wall” appears zero times. NY claptrap.
>>In today’s world “governing” means going along with the establishment, something I’m glad DJT doesn’t know how to do.
I agree.
The way he works the Left using the technology that they claim to “pwn” and forces the traitors on the Right to expose themselves to the voters is proof that he can govern in the 21st century—where politicians try to steer us into R vs D when the real fight is between Nationalists vs Transnationalists/Globalists/Progressives/Communists.
In government, as in most things, WHAT is more important than HOW.
The feds have been doing the wrong thing (”WHAT”) for decades. It really doesn’t matter HOW you do the wrong thing.
Trump has the RIGHT things (”WHAT”) in mind. HOW (governance and implementation) will come in time - Trump is a smart and quick learner.
Where would Trump be today if he had not done what he did as a candidate. Assume he was elected but chose a different governing path (go along to get along) up until today. Where would he be??? Would the media be singing his praises????
He is taking the only path he can. Twitter has actually been his salvation in governing and keeping the wolves at least at bay. IMO.
And Rallies.
Exactly! The establishment’s efforts to sabotage President Trump’s agenda have come with every kind of imaginary complaint they can think of. Most of us who live in the real world wish they would find another country or another planet.
Stands still filled today
Sometimes on I82 and I90 it seems like it's wall to wall trucks.
But McConnell knows how to run the Senate?
The GOPe is going to give Trump practically NO legislative victories fullfill his promises and the people (meaning his base and populists) will throw the bums out next year.
The trick is to primary the necessary scumbags and keep a majority in Congress and the Senate who will not betray the people who put them there.
It's not all up to Trump, he needs us.
The globalists have only proved what they are.
It's a whole lot like the NFL, again, the headline is ignorant.
Agreed. This article smell like more b/s from “establishment” thinking. IMO, America is very lucky to have Trump in there.
Fans that actually go to games are just too addicted to care.
I believe the NFL IS going to suffer for their treason because television viewership is going to drop the most.
In today’s world “governing” means going along with the establishment, something I’m glad DJT doesn’t know how to do. His next job is to turn the crowd against any Republicans that stand in his way. 2018 can’t come quickly enough.
...
You beat me to it. Well said.
The Compost is just mad he isn’t furthering communism like Clintoon, Bush, and Zero did.
