GOP Leaders Have Completely Lost Control Of Their Base

With the dust still settling, many Washington Republicans are mystified—and alarmed—by the fact that not even Donald “Drain the Swamp” Trump had enough populist cred to swing a primary race to his candidate in deep-red Alabama. While the GOP’s class of professional strategists are generally ambivalent at best when it comes to the president, they had taken a certain comfort in believing that he was fully in command of his base. The assumption allowed them to draw conclusions about what his voters wanted, how to cater to them—and how to avoid drawing their wrath.

But Alabama fully punctured the illusion that Trump was in control. For all the race’s idiosyncrasies—Trump’s endorsement of the more establishment-friendly candidate was uncharacteristic for him, and his support often seemed conflicted—it seemed to reveal that there was a limit to his supporters’ loyalty.

We do not belong to the GOP, and the GOP has no leaders.

Who is supposed to control who?

Are not a party’s leaders answering to the voters?

What did they expect to occur? Had they passed Obamacare repeal and replace or at least some other major piece of legislation then Luther Strange would have been just been nominated. Even if we assume for the sake of argument Roy Moore is as nuts as they fear, they created the atmosphere leading to his nomination themselves - they were Roy Moore’s strongest campaigners. If they had passed substantial legislation and showed some semblance of accomplishment, the driving force behind Roy Moore’s campaign of “sticking it to the establishment” would not have materialized. It’s as simple as that.

Very simple reasons. The people have found someone that intends to follow thru on his promises. We may not be happy with some of the things that the President has done...Most of all, DACA.

But, he is actually DOING something. He isn’t sitting around apologizing and making excuses for everything. He’s not maintaining the status quo, just so some donor or lobbyist can take him out to dinner and then get him a stripper.

How long have the Republicans said that they are going to: end obamacare, cut taxes, ease regulation, small government, prosecute lerner,? Years and years and years.

Every 2 to 6 years, we hear the SOS and then are lied to for another 2 to 6 years. And the President is/has been, doing fantastic job of exposing them.

Trump didn’t really feel the need to intervene much in Alabama. Strange claimed to support Trump, and Moore was an excellent alternative in his eyes; therefore, Trump gave an endorsement of Strange and focused his attention on more important things. Trump probably also wanted to keep the tumultuous turtle McConnell quiet.

Roy Moore won because Roy Moore has a track record of excellency, extending many years. Moore would have won regardless of Trump’s actions, and Moore would be a staunch Trump backer no matter what.

Both Trump and Moore will #MAGA and cause liberal suicides to skyrocket. I can’t complain!

Yes. The voters are supposed to control their party leaders. Not the other way around

The Tea Party is still alive and well, despite the many announcements of its death.

Let the Cantorizing begin with the Amnesty Senators

GOP Leaders Have Completely Lost Control Of Their Base

My problem with this statement and the GOP “leaders” is that it is not their role to “CONTROL their BASE” Their job is to REPRESENT their BASE—and they are NOT doing that!

I don't think voters really believed Trump was endorsing Strange, we realized he was trying to work the turtle to get Obamacare repealed.

Since when are party “leaders” supposed to “control” the voters who elect them? Sounds un-American to me.

GOP leaders do not control me.

When it comes to politics, I'm a Conservative first and foremost. Occasionally, the Republicans run conservative candidates, and I will vote them. Many times, the Republicans don't run conservative candidates, and I don't vote for them.

If Republicans want our votes, they need to do our bidding, and not the bidding of the lobbyists and the rich guys that buy them off.
