US supercarrier to dock in Hong Kong before joint drills in shadow of North Korea crisis

USS Ronald Reagan may test inter-Korean maritime limit in exercises with South Korean navy

A US supercarrier is set to make a port call in Hong Kong this week before heading to waters near the Korean peninsula for a joint naval drill amid heightened tensions over Pyongyang’s nuclear programme.

The visit by the USS Ronald Reagan, the biggest US warship based in Asia, will be the first by an American carrier in two years – Beijing turned down a Hong Kong port call request from another US aircraft carrier in April last year.
The USS Reagan is expected to take part in exercises with the South Korean navy around October 15,Yonhap News Agency cited a Seoul defence official as saying.
Concerns have grown over the possibility of the US warship crossing the Northern Limit Line, a de-facto inter-Korean maritime boundary established in the Yellow Sea after the Korean war.

South Korea’s Chosun Ilbo last week quoted a South Korean government official as saying the US was considering “a wide range of options” against North Korea, including “a US aircraft carrier group crossing over the Northern Limit Line”.

An interesting timing and location of port call. Probably another PR gesture by China. This should not go down well to Pyongyang. China is hosting an aircraft carrier of a country which could obliterate N. Korea.

China is dropping hints they are fed up with North Korea. First cutting off banks, and now letting the USS Ronald Reagan no less, make a port of call before a exercise.

Docking in China. Yes that is a clear sign of a unified effort.

I made 7 port calls to HK in 2 1/2 years, but that was before the red takeover.

These exercises off Korea happen every year. Nothing new.

When you’re an enlisted man on a tin can, there’s nothing worse than a bird farm in port. If the destroyer is the only ship in port, you are treated like royalty. When the carrier comes in, you are dirt.

I made a few port calls there in the late 70's.
I don't remember being able to dock there, we had to anchor in the bay
and take a launch to shore.

We also let the locals paint the ship and they stole all the brass spanner wrenches off the ship and anything else that was loose.

This is significant.

When I went to Hong Kong in the early 80’s with a Carrier Battle Group AND an Amphibious Ready Group...the big ships were required to anchor out.

Only the Frigates and DDGs were allowed to tie up along side the pier.

Not just port call, but docking alongside the pier.

Got me a set of Sharkskin dress blues with silk lining, dragon cuffs and zippers on either side of the jumper.

Probably set me back about 20 bucks US(??) Who kept track of such trivia??
