Why should the government help at all? is it in the constitution? By creating FEMA, expectations have risen so that now everyone believes it’s the government’s obligation to give people money, save them and rebuild. This turns the taxpayers into insurers for everbody.

Too late to go back now.

Today, the gubmint assumes the charity role.
And the charities are just parasites taking tax deductions and spending on lavish charity fund raising and private jets.

“Private sector does it better and quicker,” he told me. “Not a lot of rules and regulations.”

However, thanks to “O” and other Liberal bloodsuckers ... the private donations have been harder and harder to make now that the gov’t takes SO much up front from your income... THE FED will help who THEY want to and will be better at deciding WHO that is, than you are. Right?

The statement about “Funding freeloaders” is amusing. They do, and will do so, just to feel important. Not every charity, but many.

There is power in being the one who gives the hand out.

Representative Lee was likely hoping to get her hands on the money.

Hey! Who rebuilds my home when destroyed by an arsonist? My pain is just as deep as those losing their homes by acts of God. We are on the wrong path. People would be more appreciative if charities helped them and this world would be a better place. Counting on the government leads to disappointment, privilege and socialism.

Start with ending or greatly reducing corporate welfare, subsidies, tax breaks, kick backs, etc & then I’ll worry more about Americans getting government assistance after a deadly & widespread natural disaster or terrorist attack.

San Francisco is a strategically located city so private interests would be expected to invest in a region which had a definite future even after the devastation of a massive earthquake.

I don't think the same can be said for Puerto Rico. There are plenty of other islands for tourists to visit in the Caribbean. What is Puerto Rico uniquely suited for?

Having bombs dropped on it?

Even if we did get the government out, what then becomes the proper role of other organizations? The answer seems obvious but some organizations are supposedly interfering with others. For example, on the White House petition site someone has put up a petition claiming that The Red Cross has a special relationship with FEMA that allows Red Cross to gather relief resources and distribute or dispose as they see fit interfering with other relief efforts. True or not is neither here nor there at this point. The question is, should there be anyone organization in charge? Should any central private group be allowed to take charge of supporting disaster recovery efforts? I can think of reasons for and against this. Getting government out, especially feds, may be a great idea but we neex to have a conversation as to how that proceeds. One thing we all should have learned by now is that we cant let some bureaucracy engage in independent machinations.
