RUSH: I want to switch gears here. Puerto Rico has been on the back burner even though the president has been there. The Drive-By Media who have been reporting on this are nevertheless reporting that Trumps botched it, that Donald Trump doesnt care, because most of the people down there are not white.
There are actually people in the Drive-By Media saying this, many of them at CNN. Yeah, Trump doesnt care. Theyre not white. They probably wouldnt vote for him. He doesnt care. Despite the fact hes been down there. Despite the fact hes been helping to pass out aid and putting together relief packages and so forth.
So the Treasury secretary today, Mick Mulvaney Im sorry. Hes the Office of Management and Budget. Hes the OMB guy. And hes a Rush Baby, by the way. We have interviewed him for The Limbaugh Letter. I met him when I was at the White House back in March. Sharp, sharp guy. OMB, Trumps Office of Management and Budget guy.
He was on with Fredo Cuomo today on CNN. Mick Mulvaney has been talking about and Trumps been talking about all the fake news about Trump as not caring and all the other BS the media has been reporting out of Puerto Rico. And Fredo said, Whats fake about our reporting, about the depth of despair and the need for relief? Whats fake about that?
MULVANEY: All yall show is the bad stuff. We spent several hours on the island yesterday afternoon. Got a chance, for example, to get briefed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The folks working on the electrical grid. And, by the way, some of the efforts down there are absolutely fantastic. We met with mayors of large and small towns. Theres a lot of good things happening. I think the presidents frustration, our frustration as an administration is the media seems to only want to focus on the bad things and not show both sides of the story. I think thats a fair frustration to have.
RUSH: Now, Fredo, really these kinds of complaints do not register with Fredo. Its hard to describe the single-mindedness of most in the media, and its hard to describe the lack of curiosity they have for anything other than what they think or what they believe. But Im telling you, they dont have any curiosity. There isnt validity to anything they dont already believe or think they know. And so when Mulvaney comes along, You guys are only telling half the story. You guys are engaging in fake news here.
Fredo thinks the only story in Puerto Rico is the despair. Fredo thinks the only story is the human depravity, the human despair, the human poverty. The only story is the destruction. The only story is how nothing is getting fixed. The only story is that nobody seems to care. Thats it, as far as theyre concerned. There isnt anything else in their minds. If there were, theyd be reporting it.
And so somebody comes along, You guys arent telling the whole story. Fredo is genuinely shocked. He doesnt think there is anything else. Fredo, youll not find him in the leadership of this where they define the leftist agenda. Hes a foot soldier, a loyal foot soldier who wants to impress management and the leaders. So whatever he picks up on that they care about, thats all there is. There isnt another side, there isnt an alternative, and theyre not making anything up. So I want you to understand that as you listen to their conversation continue.
CUOMO: What two sides to the story? The need is real.
RUSH: Wait a minute. Stop the tape. See what I mean? Recue that. What two sides of the story? I love this. Did I not just say I knew what was coming next but I had not read the transcript, folks. This is an example of how I know these people better than they know themselves.
He doesnt think theres another side to the story. The side theyre reporting is it and only it, and anybody who thinks otherwise is biased. Anybody who thinks theres another side to this is prejudiced or a conservative or whatever. He genuinely doesnt think and doesnt know theres another side to this. Just like there wasnt in Katrina. Just like there isnt another side to the story of Trump colluding in Russia. It happened. They just cant find the evidence yet, but it happened, as far as Fredos concerned.
So he says here, What two sides of the story? The need is real. The distress is real. Thats the only thing that matters in Puerto Rico, people are hurting, people are suffering, theyre in distress, and Trump doesnt care, and Trump doesnt do anything about it. As far as hes concerned, thats it. There is nothing else. The jet, the airline, its still missing. There isnt any other side to that. So here it is again, now that you know, heres the whole exchange.
CUOMO: What two sides to the story? The need is real. The distress is real.
MULVANEY: Right.
CUOMO: We are showing the efforts. Because of the rhetoric out of this White House, weve spent a lot of our time talking to first responders who are saying, Why do you say were not working? Why do you say that were not down here to help? Nobody has reported that, Mick, and its dangerous to do that. Not only is it a distraction
MULVANEY: Its not dangerous
CUOMO: its self-serving politically
MULVANEY: let me answer your question.
CUOMO: It makes people not believe the need
MULVANEY: Yeah.
CUOMO: Mick. But I want to make sure the context is right. The need is real. Thats not just the bad stuff; its the reality, Mick.
MULVANEY: Yall have put up a stat that says only 7% of the island has electricity. Thats absolutely accurate. But what you dont report is how its being done, why its being prioritized. The focus is on getting power to hospitals, to water filtrations and pump houses, nursing homes, old age retirement homes first. That story simply doesnt get reported at all. And I think thats at the root of the frustration.
RUSH: Thats an excellent point. See, to Fredo, only 7% of the island has power. Thats horrible, thats bad, thats rotten, oh, my God, theres despair, theres people suffering, and you cant tell us not to report it because thats real, thats all thats real. The only thing that matters to the news is suffering. Thats all we do. We find suffering everywhere that we can blame on Republicans. We find despair everywhere that we can blame on Republicans and Trump and thats real and we report it and thats real and you cant deny it.
Hes maniacal about this. And Mulvaney says youre not telling how that 7% happened. Youre looking at 7% as a negative and were looking at it as recovery and a positive and heres why were doing it, where were doing it first. I guarantee you Fredo was clueless hearing this, because nobody prior to Mulvaney had even explained this to him. And I dare say, had they tried, he would have thought they were trying to manipulate him and get him to not cover the despair.
And thats what they really think. When theres despair and when theres suffering and you can blame that on the Republicans, dont try to disguise it, dont try to confuse us, dont try to manipulate us into not reporting it, cause the despair is real, and its Trumps fault and its the Republicans fault. It always is. And so were gonna focus on it. And you cant trick us and you cant fool us.
Mulvaney says were not denying the despair, Fredo. There are people here working around the clock to bring it all back and youre making it sound like nothings happening. And I guarantee you that doesnt compute with Fredo. Cause hes stuck on the despair and the misery and the suffering and its Trumps fault. And thats what theyve gotta keep drilling home. He says so. Theres one more exchange, but Ill get to it after this.
BREAK TRANSCRIPT
RUSH: You gotta hear the next and last sound bite.
Mick Mulvaney, OMB, and Fredo Cuomo. Fredo doesnt like it here when Mulvaney enrages him by telling Fredo that hes sure that CNN will do a better job going forward.
CUOMO: When there are people coming up to you on the streets begging for help, you dont say, Well, you know, things arent as bad as you think, my friend. Could have been Katrina. Imagine how bad they had it. Thats not what you do in a situation like this. You report the reality. And its not being done to you, Mick, to the president, to embarrass you. Its just being able to reinforce the need. Whatevers being done, its not enough, Mick.
MULVANEY: Well, the good news is that youre clearly gonna do a better job going forward, and we appreciate that.
CUOMO: We couldnt do any better job than weve done so far. CNN has been down there like an army of ants from the beginning trying to show the need.
MULVANEY: They are starting from practically nothing. You do not bring electricity back to an island of three and a half million people in two weeks when youre starting from practically nothing.
RUSH: So theyre obsessed. Theyre obsessed with Its bad, the suffering is horrible, the need is not being met, its bad, and he does mean its your fault, Mick, and it is your fault, Trump. They would never report this kind of suffering and need when Obama was in the White House, folks. They would only focus on how great the effort was to alleviate it, which is Mulvaneys point.
“Pop wanted it that way, Fredo”
We can only hope that this fredo ends up like that fredo.
How does he figure out how to get to work on a daily basis???
