The Texas Tech University campus in Lubbock was on lockdown for more than an hour Monday night after a police officer was shot and killed at campus police headquarters, authorities said.
A call for a student "welfare check" led campus officers to a room where they found drugs and drug paraphernalia, prompting the officers to take the student to the station, a spokesman for the school said in a statement.
University Police Chief Kyle Bonath said late Monday that the suspect had been taken into custody and was being processed for jail on the drug evidence when "he produced a weapon it has yet to be determined the details of that and mortally wounded one of our officers."
Bonath said the officer's identity wouldn't be released until relatives could be notified.
The suspect, identified as Hollis A. Daniels, was tackled by a pursuing campus officer and was arrested near Jones AT&T Stadium around 9:30 p.m. CT. The lockdown was lifted shortly afterward.
Lubbock County sheriff's officials told NBC affiliate KCBD that Daniels is a 19-year-old freshman from Seguin, near San Antonio.
Well to do; drove a BMW.
“Welfare check.”
Obviously fake news; everyone knows drugs are a victim less crime.
Back around five years ago, they had a big drug-bust episode at Howard University (private upscale and expensive college). Guys were making drugs right there in their room and selling them across the campus. As in this case, these were kids who had wealthy parents and had cash, but weren’t satisfied with their cash status.
I think if you went across the top fifty college campuses in the US, you’d find over 500 private drug labs set up and producing drugs. Whole underground business structure going on.
They didn’t pat this guy down before they took him in??
This is going to look bad on his permanent record.
Bummer of a freshman year, eh dude?
Well, don’t have to worry about that sophomore, junior or senior year now.
Graduates were expected to become model citizens.
How far we have strayed.
hope this kid like needles, he will be meeting one in the future.
This might affect his transferable semester hours.
He’s going to have a “Safe Space” in which to live for a long, long time - unless Bubba gets horny.
This is going to look bad on his permanent record.

He will probably be placed on double-secret probation.
Such a tragedy
This was a fatality-causing egregious lack of process/procedure was my reaction as well.
One of the key features of Howard University is that it is "historically black."
Was he armed and they didn’t frisk him or did he grab a gun?
