UK climate change masterplan – the grownups have finally won
The Guardian ^ | October 12, 2017 | by Damian Carrington, Environment editor

The grownups have finally won and everyone in the UK, from those in cold homes to those on polluted streets and in flooded towns, will benefit. The most important aspect of the UK government’s new clean growth strategy is its unequivocal statement that tackling climate change and a prosperous economy are one and the same thing.

There is no long-term, high-carbon economic strategy because the impacts of unchecked climate change destroy economies, as Lord Nicholas Stern puts it.

But the Conservative party has long been swinging between the green dream and fossil-fuelled fantasies. Recent years have seen one green policy shredded after another, destroying confidence among the businesses we need to deliver a low-carbon economy.

The new strategy published on Thursday signals a new, if belated, beginning. It is the beginning of the end of the fossil fuel age: it is highly notable that the government plan omits any mention of fracking, having previously been its cheerleader.

However, while many of the details are missing, the clean growth strategy marks an important and vital step forward for the UK. As the prime minister Theresa May says in the plan’s foreword: “Clean growth is not an option, but a duty we owe to the next generation. Success in this mission will improve our quality of life and increase our economic prosperity.” The strategy is now crystal clear – it is time to deliver.

as the new “ice age” begins to show its frozen delights the fossil fuels will look more and more appealing.

The old story of cutting off your nose to spite your face.

I would argue the opposite is true. You must have a strong economy to be able to afford a cleaner environment.

The USA is a rich nation. I grew up in Ohio when the Cuyahoga River caught fire. When Lake Erie was a polluted mess, and when a grey cloud hung over every major city.

Due to our wealth, we could afford to clean up the mess. It ain't perfect, but things are better.

Poor countries can't afford to worry about the environment. They worry about survival. Destroy our economy at the feet of Gaia and we will slide back to same survival mode.

Liberalism always generates the exact opposite of its stated intent.

Dimwits keep using the term “fossil fuel...”

‘Deep Hot Biosphere’ seems much more plausible, and lines up with oil production information.

Green weenies will not be satisfied until we are all walking and there is no industry, innovation, nor liberty.

YMMV

The (Manchester) Guardian might as well be directly connected to Karl Marx’s anal sphincter for all it’s worth.

This will be fun to watch.

Get back with us in five years. We’ll see how the “adults” did.

When I read the headline I honestly thought it was going to be an article about abandoning the AGW lunacy. Looks like I was wrong.

The Cuyahoga River is “clean” today because all the steel mills and heavy industry are gone in Cleveland.

People shouldn't be surprised by this. The UK signed the COP21 agreement in Paris in 2015. They are moving forward on this.

The whole world is doing it, except for Syria and the Trump/Republican part of the US. The Dirty Polluters make big bucks polluting the US and give part of that money to republicans and Trump to protect themselves.

Many states, local govts, tribes, corporations, power companies, etc in the US are also planning on meeting COP21.

But CCS [Carbon Capture and Storage] gets only about a quarter of the investment of nuclear

Maybe because nuclear actually produces energy.

Duh!

" I grew up in Ohio when the Cuyahoga River caught fire.
When Lake Erie was a polluted mess, and when a grey cloud hung over..."

I remember those days too, used to drive through Cleveland late at night and the sky was lit up by furnaces from countless foundries & steel mills, etc.
Yes, pumping out a lot of smoke, but producing US heavy metal and a lot of good paying jobs.

No more.
Now the skies are blue & waters clean, but...
Today the metal & jobs are in China or elsewhere and our guys flip burgers or greet you at Wal-Mart.

You know, if there was a politician who figured out how to bring those jobs back, I'd vote for him.
I know, let's call it M.A.G.A., do you think?

Those in cold homes will benefit from those wonderful soon to be imposed higher prices. The energy your wealthy neighbour uses to heat his home will be KLEEN.

That may be part of it, but not all. Still a lot of industry up there. Ohio use to have high sulfur coal, well still does, but they built scrubbing plants to remove the sulfur to reduce pollution. I grew up in Zanesville. We used to go to football games in Philo. They had a big coal fired power plant there. I remember every house was a grimy grey from the soot. Not so anymore. Cleaner coal, better filtration,...... Need a lot of money to do that. Take a look at Eastern Europe after the wall came down. An environmental disaster. It is the same in all poor countries.

The English have perfected pompous virtue-signaling.

I am beginning to believe that early man invented language so they could deceive their neighbors. :-(
