White House chief of staff John Kelly thought President Donald Trump's remarks in a call to the widow of a Green Beret slain by Islamic State terrorists in Niger were "completely appropriate" and "respectful," press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Wednesday.
"Gen. Kelly was present for the call and thought it was completely appropriate," Sanders told reporters at the daily briefing.
"He thought the call was respectful and he thought that the president did the best job he could under those circumstances to offer condolences on the part of the country."
Trump has no recording of Tuesday's call to Myeshia Johnson, 24, of Miami Gardens, Florida, but Kelly was among "several people in the room from the administration who were on the call," Sanders said.
Kelly, who became chief of staff in July, is a retired Marine Corps general whose son was killed in Afghanistan in 2010.
Trump referenced Kelly's situation Tuesday in arguing former President Barack Obama did not call every Gold Star family in explaining why he had not yet reached out to the family of the dead Green Beret, Army Sgt. La David Johnson, 25, of Miami Gardens, Florida, sooner.
President Trump's remarks to Johnson's pregnant widow Tuesday were slammed as insensitive by Rep. Frederica Wilson, D-Fla.
Wilson charged that Trump told Mrs. Johnson of her slain husband: "He knew what he signed up for . . . but when it happens it hurts anyway."
The four-term representative was in a limousine with Johnson when President Trump called. They were on their way to meet the slain Green Beret's body, which had arrived at Miami International Airport.
La David Johnson was killed with three others in an Oct. 4 ambush by 50 ISIS terrorists in Niger.
Two other Berets were wounded and four Nigerian soldiers also died in the attack.
Johnson's body was left behind. It was found two days later and the Pentagon was investigating the circumstances surrounding his death.
The Johnsons also have a 2-year-old son and 6-year-old daughter.
This weird prism that the black community observes everything through of being “respected” or “disrespected” is such a crock. I hear it from some, not all, usually when people are trying to deflect attention from some other area of their life.
No way Kelly is going to lie. He lost a son.
You would think each one has there very own Hari Kari sword and are ready to commit seppuku at a moments notice.
If that was only the case.
Everyone is asking why we have soldiers in Niger. If McCain is one of those....tell him he knew more than anyone. Obama notified Congress several different times about sending troops to Niger.
That respect thing is tribal as opposed to Judeo/Christian.
Respect, whatever the hell that even means, is earned, not demanded.
First of all, what kind of wife would allow a personal, intimate call, from the POTUS to be aired to everyone in the car she is riding in. The loss of her “Hero” husband in defense of his country is a private matter to be discussed only between the POTUS and the wife of the fallen hero.
The “Insane” Congresswoman, Wilson is naught but an Obama low life parasite, that has been part and parcel, along with Obama, The Congressional Black Caucus, The NAACP and the entire Democrat Party, that has done zilch positives for millions of African-Americans who they all trapped and locked in the “eight year” Obama created Ghettos of economic slavery & murder, drugs, abortions, fatherless homes and general mayhem, no jobs , no opportunities, no education, and mass poverty.
It is stunningly amazing how many American Blacks are totally oblivious to the world that Obama set and kept them in, during his eight reign as a “FAILED POTUS”. Sad & Heartbreaking.
God Bless Our Fallen Hero & all our fallen Heroes, All!!! I can assure you, folks, no American loves, respects and honors you patriots and defenders of this great Republic, more then your POTUS, Donald J. Trump!!!
The operative “disrespectful” phrase in this case is quoted in every source I have seen with .... in the middle. What are the chances that the words omitted provide the proper context for the remark?
IE “He knew what he signed up for, but he was a brave young man who chose to answer the call of his country. You know that your guy is a hero, but this happens it hurts anyway.”
Go to Frederica Wilson’s Facebook page. People are unrelenting with their hatred and disgust of this woman/!
To say she’s a witch would be an insult to witches!
The LEFT always want to portray our military and veterans as helpless VICTIMS: uneducated [John Fn Kerry's "if you get edumacated, you wouldn't be there (in Afghanistan)" came to mind as one example], unskilled, and not too smart. All of serving men and women are/were pawns manipulated by the power that be without other means to escape their fate.
These vermins (the Left) deserve our total disdain.
The family has started a Gofundme account. That’s all that needs to be said. Must drive up the donations!
Some parents are liberals and will use such calls to attack President no matter what was said or how.
I believe Trump was respectful too. Wilson’s behavior is disgraceful.
Most white people have not been caught up in how this group deals with loss. I live in Memphis and have attended many funerals of neighbors and coworkers. I am extremely cautious. Usually a dozen or so women there loaded for bear
She deserves it. Glad to see that people are fighting back. What a disgusting thing she did.
This weird prism that the black community observes everything through of being respected or disrespected is such a crock.
That is because, many blacks can’t get beyond the color of THEIR own skin. Everything they do is driven by their race, which is why many can not fairly lead in public offices.
This was a complete setup and is despicable.
The family’s ‘scholarship’ goal is $1 millon on gofundme for the three children. They’ve received $552k so far.
