Live Your Life Worthy of Their Sacrifices!

My heart breaks and tears trickle down my cheek this morning as I gather my thoughts to share from the depths of a Gold Star Mother's heart. My fingers shake as I place them on the keyboard of my computer. How have we as a nation come to the place of tolerating the disrespect for our flag, our faith in God, and our fallen warriors and our Gold Star families?

As a Mother whose sons and son-in-law served as a Marine, Soldier, and Navy SEAL and a brother who retired after 33 years in the Air Force our family has carried the responsibility to defend and protect our freedoms. We are God fearing patriots who love our country, our flag, it's people and all that it represents.

We are not naive to think that this is a perfect country or that we are perfect people. We are not racists, my children are half Spanish, I have grandchildren who are half Japanese. I was a single Mom most of my kid's life, with a high school diploma. We didn't grow up with a silver spoon in our mouth. I remember one month when we had $20.00 to feed my 3 growing teens. We lived on oatmeal, Top Ramen, beans and were grateful for the fruit and vegetables that grew in our garden.

I was determined that we would not make welfare a way of life. I was not a perfect Mom, just ask my kids, but I was determined to not quit. It was a struggle, and the difficult times and trials were a preparation of strength that would be required the day we were notified that my son Navy SEAL, Marc Alan Lee had been killed in action. I became a Gold Star Mother that day, a title I never wanted. I never wanted to fly a Gold Star Flag over my home. I never wanted the folded flag from my son's casket presented to me "on behalf of a grateful nation." I never wanted to kiss my sons cold face as he lay in his casket and tell him goodbye.

I had no choice the news that was given to me on Aug 2, 2006, but I did have a choice how I responded, My choice was to put on Marc's boots, pick up his weapon (figuratively speaking) and stay in the fight for our troops and families of our fallen. I do know who pays the price for our freedoms, the sacrifices made, and it is our responsibility to live lives worthy of their sacrifices.

It disgusts me and rips my heart in two when I see those who choose not stand for our National Anthem. My son stood in the line of fire and gave his life, so you could have your freedoms and you can't stand to honor his sacrifice and that of every Veteran who gave their life or fought for you? That red stripe in our flag represents their blood that was shed for this country and for you. Where is the respect, fortitude and courage from the NFL, Owners and fans to not tolerate this? I am an avid Denver Bronco fan for more years than I care to admit, and until the players can stand for our national Anthem and honor and respect our flag and what it represents, I'm done. I'm not watching games or buying any NFL gear, and I encourage you to take a stand and do the same. They are protesting for social injustice and the lack of unity and, yet their divisive actions are causing a deeper divide. I'm a fighter and have used my voice and my life to make a difference when I see an injustice, and I would encourage them to do the same, but this is not the right way to do it.

Then we see the egregious way that our Gold Star families are being used and manipulated for a political agenda. Rep Fredrica Wilson should be ashamed of herself. President Trump decides to reach out privately to the families of our fallen heroes. Probably one of the toughest phone calls he ever must make. He seeks advise from his Chief of Staff Gen Kelly, a Gold Star Father himself as what is the right thing to say.

People often ask me for advice as to what they should say in a time like this. There are no "right" words. There is nothing anyone could say that will take your deep pain and grief away. I always tell people to just, be there. That is what President Trump was doing, he was trying to let these families know that as a nation we are here.

His staff would have reached out to the next of kin to see if they were open to his call, and then a time would be scheduled for the call. Representative Fredrica Wilson didn't just happen to be in the car, they knew the call was coming in. She has been vocal in expressing her hatred for President Trump before and should be ashamed that she took this private moment with a grieving widow and our Commander-In-Chief, and politicized it to continue to spew her hatred towards the President who America chose.

I was so proud Of Gen John Kelly as he was vulnerable and poured his heart out yesterday at the Whitehouse regarding this issue and his disgust as well for Representative Fredrica Wilson. My heart was deeply moved as I listened to him describe the protocol and process when we lose another brave warrior in combat. It was probably the most moving Press conference I have ever watched. Our nation is blessed to have men of Gen Kelly's character continuing his selfless service, after his military career, continuing to stand for what is right.
He mentions that he was so troubled by the comments from Rep Wilson, that he went to Arlington and spent an hour and a half walking through the final resting place of so many heroes who fought and defended our nation. He knows how to honor our fallen, I'm guessing that his sons grave was one of this he visited.

I can tell you as a Mother it is so bizarre to see your child's name on a headstone or a granite wall. I can also tell you there is no greater pride than knowing that your child was so brave and selfless that they would chose to give up all their tomorrows so that we could each have our today's.

Instead of a heart change and apology from Rep. Wilson she then when into attack mode on Gen Kelly, saying he was just trying to keep his job by doing the press conference. Her comments, that she will have to tell her children she is now a Rock Star because the President is talking about her, reveals her "It's all about me attitude." Quite a contrast from our men and women who serve and selflessly give and never expect anything or want the attention.

I have been met President Trump and Gen Kelly and was in the Whitehouse in June for an event to honor about 100 of our fallen heroes. They went above and beyond to honor and remember our warriors and the families they left behind. Gen Kelly and President Trump both spoke, they deeply and sincerely care about our Gold Star Families. That was revealed again when President Trump knowing how difficult it would be to make the phone calls to the families of our fallen, chose to do that.

It grieves my heart and spirit to see how complacent many Americans have become to understanding where we have come from as a nation and who has paid that deep price and sacrificed greatly for us to be the nation we are. A nation that people are willing to leave their homeland behind and reach for the freedoms America offers.

Just this morning I watched a video of from Dr Pamela Caudry on FB who shared that she had just been on a flight that landed in Atlanta. On approach the pilot asked the passengers to stay in their seats when we land as there was a fallen warrior and his escort on the flight. Her husband was a Navy Captain for 20 years and she spontaneously had the idea to sing the National Anthem when the honor guard escorted the casket from the flight. She shared her thought with each passenger on the flight and asked them to participate if they wanted to. She went back to her seat and was approached by the Senior Flight attendant who informed her that Delta had a policy that the National Anthem could not be sung on their flights. The flight attendant then made an announcement that when they land everyone is to remain in their seats and quiet.

What has happened in America that major companies who earn their profits from Americans have policies forbidding singing our National Anthem on our home soil because we might offend people from another country. Offend foreigners because we celebrate, honor and respect the country we live in???? Don't come to America then! Our national sport of football has players who want their salaries paid by patriots but don't want to honor our Nations flag or anthem that represents us?

My son wrote a letter several weeks before he died that has changed millions of lives around the world and I would encourage each of you to go to our website americasmightywarriors.org and read it. He ends that letter with "to my family and friends do me a favor, pass on the kindness, the love, the precious gift of human life." What if we woke up every morning and committed to have this attitude, we would see a different world in no time.

We have created a twitter page #AMWNationalAnthem and are asking you to record you, your family, your co-workers, your team or whomever singing the National Anthem or reciting the pledge of allegiance. The other one is #AMWHonor, and we are asking you to do a Random Act of Kindness, as Marc mentions in his amazing letter, for a Gold Star family and post it. We also have FB pages under AMW Honor and AMW National Anthem if you prefer to post on FB. Then please share this letter on your social media and with family and friends and ask them to participate.

Let's live our lives worthy of their sacrifices and lock arms off the field and together pray for our nation for healing, let's stand and honor our flag and the sacrifices made to keep us free, and let's kneel before the cross.

God bless,
Debbie Lee

Nothing has made me tear up like this letter and the actions of the people who wanted others to share.

I once had a dream that I traveled through Mexico, through Central Americas and down the west coast of South America in search for my son’s skeleton. When I started I knew no Spanish when I got to Peru I did and I asked for areas where the Shining Path was engaging American special forces units. Of course I didn’t know where my beloved son was but I asked for grave sites of American bones. Finally after digging and looking at bones for several months, I found his teeth. His beautiful teeth. And My heart was relieved and quest was over.

That was all a dream, horrific as it was. But the relief I had to have found him was boundless.

There is no relief from death but to honor him in life and death is a glorious thing. Their bodies were not lost. What a wonderful honor for our Fallen Soldiers.

I am so proud of the mothers of fallen soldiers!! They are keepin the memories alive.
