White House Chief of Staff John Kelly waded into the long-simmering dispute over the removal of memorials to Confederate leaders saying in a televised interview on Monday night that "the lack of an ability to compromise led to the Civil War."
In the interview on Fox News' "The Ingraham Angle," host Laura Ingraham asked Kelly about the decision by Christ Church, an Episcopal congregation in the Washington suburb of Alexandria, Virginia, to remove plaques honoring President George Washington and Robert E. Lee, the commander of Confederate forces during the Civil War.
"Well, history's history," said Kelly, whom President Donald Trump moved from secretary of homeland security to be his chief of staff in July. "You know, 500 years later, it's inconceivable to me that you would take what we think now and apply it back then. I think it's just very, very dangerous. I think it shows you just how much of a lack of appreciation of history and what history is."
Confrontations over removal of Confederate monuments have exposed deep rifts in American society between advocates who argue that the Civil War is a foundation stone of American history whose combatants acted out of conscience and those who contend that the memorials honor Southern defenders of slavery who betrayed their country by launching an armed rebellion.

Kelly’s not the only one who believed it was unnecessary.
The libs are always saying that negotiation is better than war. They should be agreeing with Kelly.

He missed a coupla good opportunities they say: He failed to continue on to the swamp @ Mannasas, and immediately after Gettysburg he failed again to go to the swamp, even though he was then in between the yankke army and lincoln.

I see nothing wrong with his comments. I’m sure there were men and leaders during the Civil War who asked themselves “how did we let it come to this?” as they surveyed the carnage.
A friend was telling me the other day that his West Point graduate bass was espousing this the other day as how they are taught the Civil War at West Point.
In the way he explained it, it made a lot of sense.
Unless Trump told Kelly to go out and create a distraction, it’s hard to see the utility in this statement.
If only we had a time machine to take us back to show leaders at the time what horror their decision to go to war caused.
If Kaiser Wilhelm could have been told WWI would last 4 years, killing millions and he would be deposed at the end.
If leaders in the pre-US Civil War could know the cost in lives and devastation to the South, maybe they would have agreed to free the slaves and compensate the then slave owners with a federal payment funded by national and import taxes. Maybe the newly freed could have been protected with laws allowing them work and education to integrate them into the national society.
Compromise=negotiation=artofthedeal

I agree with what you said. I’ve always thought that cooler heads SHOULD have prevailed but they didn’t and that’s sad....:(
I’m a Southerner and still have great respect for General Lee and his commanders and it enrages me to have this part of our history destroyed and I don’t know how we can stop this carnage (in a word) of destroying statues, changing names of streets or anything to do with the Civil War. It happened, it’s history, warts and all!!!
On the flip side - it was a terrible loss of life and display of carnage for a group that decided to re-enslave itself to the masters of the DNC....
Besides, slavery was a sideline to the actual seeds that ignited the war...

Once South Carolina declared its independence, the Federal government had no reason to maintain an armed force at Fort Sumter.
A small compromise to prevent a war. Relinquish it.
Wonder if the South would have freed the slaves if the North would have taken half of them
The US military is understandably not keen on giving up military bases it owns outright. Fort Sumter was literally a US-military-made island (artificial), and occupants were minding their own business, not interfering with anything else in the area - and did not take kindly to getting shelled by the nearby country. “Compromise” favoring peace would have required nothing more than the CSA leave the fort alone.

Methinks peaceful compromise comes better from “you made X, it’s yours, keep it” than “you made X, now give it to me & GTFO.”
Kelly is absolutely right as to why.

That's 1 million war related cauualties out of a population of about 32 million.
Figure half the population were men and half women so that is 1 out of every 16 men.
Imagine a civil war today with 6,000,000 casualties.
That's why I rate Abraham Lincoln as one of the worst presidents.
