Nearly all senators saw a drop in their popularity during the third quarter of 2017, but GOP lawmakers took the biggest hit, according to a new Morning Consult poll.
Of the 25 senators whose approval ratings fell the most, 18 are Republicans and seven are Democrats. And of the 10 most unpopular senators, just two are Democrats, one of whom, New Jersey Sen. Robert Menendez, is facing federal corruption charges. Maine Sen. Susan Collins, Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski, and Nevada Sen. Dean Heller, all Republicans, saw their net approval ratings among GOP voters fall 40 points, 31 points, and 25 points, respectively. All three lawmakers broke at various points from President Donald Trump and GOP leadership on the party's attempts to repeal and replace Obamacare.

Sure would be nice to see the last of Collins and Murkowski. But they seem to have just the right kind of corruption to get constantly re-elected.

If any Republican wants to get his/her approval numbers up, just support the President. That’s all you need to do.

The mushy middle, who I guess they are trying to appeal to, don’t follow politics close enough to have an opinion one way or the other.
Thus, after trying to be “reasonable” and “bi-partisan” it ends up that...no one likes them.
Yet they keep winning reelections.

I had a thought as I read your very accurate analysis. It just might be that the "mushy middle" doesn't like politicians who are in the mushy middle. They're the ones who won't fight for themselves. Perhaps for that reason they like pols who will fight for them.
Could that be part of the reason President Trump did better than expected with them?
You may have a point.
My elder son is “mushy middle”. He is generally conservative, but doesn’t really follow politics. He didn’t like Trump in the primaries, but then he didn’t really like anyone in the primaries. He didn’t trust Hillary and ended up voting for Trump, even though he found him personally repugnant (more on that later) he thought he would get stuff done.
He had a low opinion of Trump because he barely follows any news - typical mushy middle cares only about what is going on in his immediate surroundings - and the only thing he kept hearing about was how badly Trump treats women. Even though it wasn’t true, it was repeated enough times by the left that even someone who doesn’t watch the news or follow politics came away with the impression that Trump was a lewd cad.
We will never win this fight unless we can do something about the left leaning press.
