NC State school song criticized for including the word 'Dixie'

North Carolina State University’s student body president recently penned an op-ed complaining about the “racial implications” of including the word “Dixie” in the school’s Alma Mater song.

Jackie Gonzalez, who was elected student body president for the 2017-18 school year, begins her op-ed in The Technician by introducing her identity, explaining that she is writing as a both “a student leader and person of color at a predominately white institution.”

Sorry. That still won’t work. The word “shrine” has a religious connotation, and that might offend some atheist somewhere.

Better to scrap the whole thing and just go with: “Oh, North Carolina. You are a state. Oh, North Carolina.”
