NFL Team Invites Navy Veteran to Game to Honor Him — His Response Hits League Right Where It Hurts

The National Football League wanted to honor a retired U.S. Navy officer with a special award at Sunday’s New Orleans Saints game — but the veteran shot them down hard.

Cmdr. John Wells, who was set to receive the Peoples Health Champion Award, responded to the offer in a letter to executives in the Saints organization and Peoples Health. The award is given to community members who have achieved “significant accomplishments.”

However, Wells wanted nothing to do with it.

"I am unable, in good conscience, to enter an NFL stadium while this discourtesy prevails,” Wells wrote, according to WDSU-TV.

The veteran continued:

“I had hoped and prayed that the NFL would outlaw these disgraceful protests and wanted to give the commissioner and the owners a fair opportunity to do so. Their failure to act is a slap in the face to all of those who have served in uniform. Men and women have fought and died for the flag that the players are disrespecting,” he said.

He definitely got his message across.

Though several players have taken part in national anthem protests across the NFL, Saints quarterback Drew Brees sought to find middle ground and the team kneeled before the anthem rather than during it.

I will not return to Gillette Stadium until the Patriots fire every player that kneeled.

“..While this discourtesy prevails.”
The Cmmdr. is very well spoken, and gets his message across immediately.
The kneelers are too dense to get it, or think it matters.

The Saint’s management bitch slapped him back

“”We will not allow Mr. Wells’ decision and subsequent media appearances to distract our players and organization from continuing to honor and support our military and veterans. We, as an organization, have decided to move on from this sad and divisive discourse and focus our attention on supporting our military and veterans.”

Management went on to state that the team is committed to honoring, supporting and recognizing service men and women and veterans. Instead of the presentation to Wells, the team will use the time to highlight non-political military advocacy programs and encourage fans and the community to contribute to groups who support the military and veterans.”

“Sad and divisive discourse” is pretty rich coming from people who think deliberately dishonoring the flag and the anthem are legitimate discourse. To hell with them.

I'd like to hear this mindless millionaire explain exactly what it is he is kneeling about!

If only EVERY Veteran would do so. I’d love to see the standard bearers (whether active duty, or N/ROTC folks) simply refuse to be window dressing anymore.

Same here. I'll never go to Gillette again.

It's much more comfortable to watch from my couch, with my dedicated "Man Of The House" bathroom right down the hall, and a fully-stocked kitchen mere steps away. I could never justify the expense, travel time, or inconvenience, and that was before the feces-brained-millionnaires started disrespecting the flag and our Nation because they're so "oppressed."

Eff the turd-heads.

I know PDT ‘cannot’ personally do it but it would be nice for DOD to say that as long as the NFL is taking this stance, that NO MILITARY personnel will be allowed to partake in any NFL related activity. NBA also, if they don’t straighten up.

Also ‘suggest’ they do not attend the games on their own. Of course up to the person BUT an official function could be controlled by DOD

I don’t think USAA had been convinced that would be the right way to go but....

And I will not watch any NFL game until ALL the kneelers are out of the league.
