Hezbollah: Lebanon PM forced to resign by Saudi Arabia

The head of Lebanon's powerful militant group Hezbollah accused Saudi Arabia Sunday of forcing the country's prime minister to resign after less than a year in his post, as Bahrain ordered its citizens in Lebanon to "leave immediately" and banned travel there.

Prime Minister Saad Hariri stunned Lebanon and its leaders Saturday when he announced his resignation in a televised statement recorded in Saudi Arabia, citing Iranian and Hezbollah meddling in Arab affairs.

Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah, one of Lebanon's most powerful figures, said the statement was "dictated and forced upon" Hariri and called for calm as Lebanese leaders consult over next steps.

Hariri's abrupt resignation has set off anxious chatter about Lebanon's unstable political configuration and put it at the center of a spiraling regional rivalry between Saudi Arabia and Iran.

It has also raised worries that the Gulf kingdom, under the leadership of its increasingly bullish Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman, will squeeze Lebanon as a way to get to Iran's proxy Hezbollah.

"We need to wait and see why Saudi Arabia obligated the head of the government to resign," said Nasrallah.

MSB and Trump both realize that Saudi was being held prisoner by the radicals...with Prince Alwaleed bin Talal holding the key to the jail cell.

Now bin Talal is getting ready to be locked away in said cell.

Like Rex Tillerson or not, he probably knows more about the oil industry and its soft spots than anybody else in the world. Four of the world's powers with which we have varying degrees of complex and difficult relationships are Saudi, Iran, Russia, and Venezuela. All depend on their oil industries to finance their existence. Looks like Trump is putting the pressure where it will do the most good, and do it with the least bloodshed.

The king and crown prince are good guys who actually want the people to be part of the world. They would have been unable to do these things without PDJT in office.

MBS is Mohammed bin Salman. The son of King Sultan and heir to the throne.

I thought that’s who you were referring to but I could’t recall the guy’s name. You think he’s legit?

I think he's proving whether or not he's legit.

If he survives, he's legit.

If he is overthrown in a coup...he's not.

SA is on the razor's edge for the next few weeks.

The key here is that he resigned in SAUDI ARABIA, not in Leb, and did so shortly after meeting with the king-to-be.

What I meant was if you thought he was a true reformer.

IOW, no, he wasn't. Thanks RoosterRedux. I suspect a collaborative effort to destroy the Hizzie arsenal of missiles stored in underground bunkers will start before any US military strike on the Norks.

Trump recognized some of the “complexities” they were up against and offered support if they take the right fork in the road they are traveling...

IOW, no, he wasn't.

Hariri wasn't forced? Could you elucidate? I'm trying (hopefully not in vain) to understand what's going on with this... I think you could shed light and I will read your comments carefully.

He wasn't forced to resign by Saudi Arabia, he resigned because he was in fear for his life thanks to the Hizzies, who are spreading out that partilcular lie about why it happened. See, that was easy to understand.

But why is Hariri now in detention in Saudi Arabia, if he freely resigned? And who has ever heard of a Prime Minister who left his country in order to resign from abroad, and now apparently is not able to return?
