Things that go bump in the night in Riyadh #SaudiPurge
Middle East Eye ^ | Monday 6 November 2017 14:08 UTC | David Hearst

It is difficult to avoid the conclusion that Hariri's resignation, the Saudi purge, and the Houthi missile fired at Riyadh are interconnected.

Saturday night was a busy one for Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The kingdom’s 32-year old heir to the throne excelled himself. He surpassed the high levels of chaos and human misery he had already achieved as the defence minister who launched the air campaign on Yemen.

First up was the sudden resignation of the Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri after just one year in office. Hariri made his announcement from Riyadh, which is a curious place to resign the premiership of Lebanon. His speech was hardline anti-Hezbollah and anti-Iran, setting a tone not heard from him in years.

A few days before he gave no indication that he was under the threat of assassination, as he claimed in his speech. He allowed airport workers to take selfies with him, and left Lebanon in a sunny and optimistic mood.

Hariri thought he had survived the pressure which had been applied last year on his construction company Saudi Oger, which was facing bankruptcy, and a meeting with Saudi Minister of State for Gulf Affairs Thamer al-Sabhan went well.

Al-Sabhan tweeted that the two agreed on "many things that are of interest”. But the minister’s tone changed rapidly after Hariri’s resignation. He then tweeted: "The hands of treachery and aggression must be amputated,” referring to Hezbollah and Iran.

This has to be Trump’s, Tillerson’s, Bannon’s influence, cutting down Bush’s, Clinton’s investments...

Now, it would be way cool if this upset Soros’ applecart of investments!

“David Hearst is editor-in-chief of Middle East Eye. He was chief foreign leader writer of The Guardian . . .”. Author formerly of a leftist rag doesn’t like it; must be something good happening!

I connected the author’s name. I knew the Guardian was Leftist bent.

The media in SA is state run. There is no opposition. Outside SA it is hard to develop a good perspective of what happens there.

Times like these illustrate that internal power struggle.

Clinton was never an investor. He always had his hand out for a bribe. Der Hildebeast is far worse than Bill was. Bill liked women. Hillary only likes power and money and is a totally ruthless vermin.

Glad you like it.

I cannot swear for the accuracy, but almost any glimps of internal light coming out of SA is unusual.

What will be interesting is what will he do with them now. He can’t keep them locked up in the Ritz Carlton forever. I️ wonder if the young prince will be ruthless enough to do what must be done

I can think of worse prisons than the Ritz Carlton.

From what I’ve heard, the answer is yes. But nothing in SA is apparent from the outside.

Prior to Trump, I think the State Department was kidding itself about how to deal with this. There are still lots of subversives within the Department.

I’ve never stayed at the Ritz. Have been in meetings at the one in Chicago. And at dinner at that one once. All many years ago.

The article describes how Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri was “asked to resign”? It’s called making you a deal you cannot refuse.

Wonder? Do we have the same type of “deals” floating around DC?

My gut tells me it is possible.

Seen rumors of alliances being built with SA and Israel, against the coming Iranian attempt at hegemony. And a young King that wants to bring SA into the modern world and shun Wahabbist’s. Can’t keep the 30 somethings down forever that just want to be like everyone else in the world and have a fun life.

Should be interesting times.

Yes, I’ve read about that.

Problem is how much can he change and how much can you believe they really mean.

I was excited when they said they would recognize a free Kurdistan. You saw what happened after the Referendum. Iran and Turkey went totally Bonkers. And Baghdad did almost the same.

Not sure how that is going to work out.

I’m closer to Syrian Kurds, their situation is different. But not that much different.

Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri is now disclosing the nature of his resignation, and why he left Lebanon to spend time in Saudi Arabia. It appears the Saudi and regional partners provided evidence that Iran and Hezbollah were planning an assassination targeting Hariri and his family.
