For the same reason that Sarah Palin sued the New York Times, and the same reason why a friend of mine spent $10,000 challenging a No-Fault Divorce in CT. Nobody wants to acquiesce in his own destruction, especially when reputation is involved. If you don't fight back, it would be all to easy to the matter is settled and non-controversial.
