Russian Revolution: What young Soviets wanted for today's Russians

To mark the 100th anniversary of the Russian Revolution, time capsules that were buried 50 years ago across the country are being unearthed.

The 1917 upheaval, including the October Revolution, saw the toppling of the Russian monarchy and the Russian Empire eventually replaced by the Soviet Union.

Young people in 1967 wrote letters to their 2017 peers, celebrating the achievements of Soviet rule and anticipating exciting developments in space exploration and science.

But they could have hardly imagined that - 50 years later - flights to Mars would still be a distant reality, and that the Soviet Union would have collapsed before their messages saw the light of day.

The Bolsheviks massacred the Russian intelligentsia, officers and the entrepreneurial class. The Bolsheviks managed to erase from the face of the earth, even the traditional Russian village. The Bolsheviks disrupted the transit of Empire in pre-modern nation-state of modernity, replacing netbilling mad socialist experiment (which ended in failure — as elsewhere in the world, from Uganda to China). Where would the Germans now without the devastation of Nazism, partition and occupation? Where would Russian that escaped the yoke of the Bolsheviks, the worst (of the German aristocracy went through all the tests, the last Emperor of China was officially accepted into the Komsomol, and only the Russian elite was carved cleaned)?

We would rule Constantinople and Manchuria, forming a single geopolitical unit with the French Empire and a giant Yugoslavia, building the European Union around a powerful and independent Slavic States, gathering Europe around St. Petersburg, Moscow, Kiev, Warsaw, Belgrade, Prague, Athens and Constantinople, not London and Berlin. Our geniuses and prophets were not to languish in camps, suffering beatings and humiliation, but to work in the best laboratories. Our peasants had to toil in the farms, but to fill an endless stream of Siberia, Central Asia and North China, seizing more land with the same insatiable thirst for that and centuries before.
