The NYPD is doubling down on a new breed of security to defend the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade: an elite team of Labrador retrievers specially trained to detect explosives on roving targets in large crowds.
The dogs have completed the 18-month patent-pending "Vapor Wake" training program, which was developed at Auburn University's College of Veterinary Medicine.
Unlike normal bomb-sniffing dogs, which are adept at identifying explosives in stationary objects such as trash cans, Vapor Wake dogs keep their noises up and look for mobile threats.
The Labradors are dialed into the "thermal plumes left behind in a person's wake," Paul Hammond, the president of Vapor Wake training program VWK9 LLC, told Rolling Stone.
The dogs, which are trained to avoid the distractions of large crowds and loud noises typical of large events, can sense explosive particles and even firearm residue in this wake, Wired reported.

My dog is highly adept at generating vapor wakes. No training required. It came to him naturally.
Too bad this is in the news. This should probably be kept secret. I can immediately think of a way to defeat this strategy.
This is why Muslims hate dogs. Dogs, our best friends, have an amazing sense of smell. Some can detect one ppb in air.

Why is it that law enforcement people love to tell all their tricks? They seem to like to brag how they are going to fool the bad guys or how they managed to catch them after the fact. The military does it sometimes, as well. Don't give up your secrets!
Or, perhaps it is fake news put out to induce the bombers to take extraordinary precutins that might thwart their intnent

See... This is wear law enforcement falls on their collective @sses. This *might* be a good idea, but nobody stopped to think about the ‘next step’ — like what happens when the dog alerts. What are you going to do? Stop & frisk every person in a 10-ft radius. In NYC if you gon’t get an ACLU lawyer, family member or client in that assemblage of “persons—of-interest” you’d be fortunate. If you did, there’d be a lawsuit that would end the program and any prosecution derived for it.
A great-idea sold to law enforcement that will end up being money wasted.
Are the dog operated in teams?
Like a Lab and a German Shepard? You know - Hunter/Killer teams?
