When Lefties do not have a sense of being in charge, they conclude that the moral order of the Universe is out of whack. Socialism and the progressive Left cultural critique are their natural recourse for an explanation. In this manner a sense of grievance that arises out of personal vanity and a felt offense to status is converted into a larger grievance against society that is validated by Leftist ideology.
This is why Trump's defeat of Hillary in 2016 was and remains so distressing to the Left. They had convinced themselves that massive immigration had set demographic trends that would inevitably result in Hillary's victory and permanent ruling majority for the Left. Instead, on election night in 20, Trump's appeal to the Democrats' scorned but normally loyal white working class jackhammered into ruin the supposed electoral "Blue Wall" of Democratic states. Who knew that so many Deplorables out might be willing to repudiate their normal political loyalties?
