Report: Self-Driving Cars Will Have to Decide Who Dies During Crash
Breitbart Tech ^ | 11/25/17 | Charlie Nash

Self-driving cars may have to make the moral decision of who lives and who dies during a crash, according to a report.

“As you approach a rise in the road, heading south, a school bus appears, driving north, one driven by a human, and it veers sharply toward you. There is no time to stop safely, and no time for you to take control of the car,” USA Today explained. “Does the car: A. Swerve sharply into the trees, possibly killing you but possibly saving the bus and its occupants? B. Perform a sharp evasive maneuver around the bus and into the oncoming lane, possibly saving you, but sending the bus and its driver swerving into the trees, killing her and some of the children on board? C. Hit the bus, possibly killing you as well as the driver and kids on the bus?”

The moral dilemma has been heavily discussed with the advancement of self-driving vehicles.

According to USA Today, “Azim Shariff, an assistant professor of psychology and social behavior at the University of California, Irvine, co-authored a study last year that found that while respondents generally agreed that a car should, in the case of an inevitable crash, kill the fewest number of people possible regardless of whether they were passengers or people outside of the car, they were less likely to buy any car ‘in which they and their family member would be sacrificed for the greater good.'”

If the passenger has posted their profession, party affiliation, and financial statement upon entry into the vehicle, the algo will be a quick calculation. /sarc

Consider also the computer driving the oncoming vehicle will also be making a decision at the same time. What if its programming has a different set of priorities?

Add this to the growing list of reasons why real “self-driving cars” aren’t going to be seen on our roads anytime soon.

And that is why you’ll never get me in a self driving car.

If you’ve bought a new car lately, you should already have noticed how so many functions of driving have been automated out of our hands...and minds!

Driving has been our last actual function of freedom/liberty, etc. No coincidences in politics, and that our personal/individual cars, trucks, etc. are already all but gone.

Semper WTF!

Don’t worry, the government will get involved and solve all this. If you like your steering wheel, you can keep your steering wheel.

I agree. There will be a nanosecond decision made as to who’s most valuable. The devil in the details is who overseas the algorithm that’s used and the backdoor.

No they won’t. The luddites have really gotten obsessed with the trolley problem lately, they also haven’t bothered to notice that the trolley problem is a THOUGHT experiment and out here in reality doesn’t really happen. Especially not when you’re driving.

Same thing that happens if two people driving have different priorities: and accident. Although it’s a lot less likely because the cars are going to react faster, be generally better at avoiding accidents, there’s a good chance they’ll be running the same software, and thanks to bluetooth they might even be talking to each other to get on the same page.

The 40,000 lb self-driving Tesla Semi has orders to get the cargo delivered as rapidly as possible and at all costs ... was that a speed bump or one of those tiny self-driving vehicles? Doesn’t matter - just get it delivered.

That's why some will be driving pickups like this in the future. Metal meet plastic. Bye plastic. The last announcement in the self-driving car from the computer will be, "You're screwed. Thanks for riding wit ..."
