Republicans took a major step forward early Saturday in their decades-long fight to open a piece of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil drilling.

Included as part of the sweeping tax reform bill passed by the Senate in a 51-to-49 vote is a highly controversial provision to allow energy exploration in a 1.5 million-acre swath of ANWR known as the “1002 area,” which lies along the coast. In total, ANWR spans more than 19 million acres.

The drilling provision was seen as key to getting Sen. Lisa Murkowski, Alaska Republican, on board with the tax bill.

Revenues from oil supplement Alaska's welfare system. Yes, this would be a big deal for any Alaskan Senator, even a RINO.

Dems have been blocking this for years. i remember when Bush was POTUS and the dems said it would take 10 years. They voted it down. We would be fully operational now if they allowed it years ago. Winning on many fronts.

The people of the State each receive a piece of the profits.

Imagine if the People of the State of New York each got a piece of the Casino Money.

AK and the US needs to pump more oil on the north slope to keep the AK pipeline running hot.

To quote Bill...

It just doesn’t matter. Even if they get to hold an action for drilling rights..

A host of Greenie/Watermelon lawyers (Grenn on the outside Red on the inside) will line and - one one after another - file lawsuit after lawsuit to stop the drilling & maybe even drive the company wishing to do the drilling out of business.

Millions go to fight in court, and nothing gets drilled.

Green lawyer - it is an industry here in Alaska now, sad to say.
